Special Education in New Jersey: What Parents Need to Know

New Jersey uses child study teams and a 90-calendar-day outside limit from consent to implementation of the initial IEP. Approved Private Schools for Students with Disabilities are district placements, not a statewide family voucher.

Evaluation and IEP timing in New Jersey

An identification meeting must occur within 20 calendar days after a written referral, excluding school holidays but not summer vacation. When evaluation is warranted and the parent consents, the evaluation, eligibility decision, IEP, and implementation must be completed within 90 calendar days.

How specialized placements are funded in New Jersey

If the IEP team determines that a district program cannot provide FAPE, the district may place and fund the student at an Approved Private School for Students with Disabilities. New Jersey does not operate a general disability voucher for a unilateral family-selected placement.

Types of Special Needs Schools in New Jersey

District and regional public programs
