More than 20 years ago, Elzadie "Zadie" Smith began caring for five families' babies in her Summit home after struggling to find good child care for her own three children. Zadie's of the Oranges is one of the three family-owned centers that grew from that start, and it fills the second floor of 280 South Harrison Street in East Orange. Our classrooms take children from infancy through kindergarten, and we offer free public preschool for children who live in East Orange and in South Orange and Maplewood. Our teaching staff holds New Jersey P-3 certification, and lesson planning follows the state's Preschool Teaching and Learning Standards and developmentally appropriate practice, with kindergarten readiness as the goal. Meals cost families nothing: children get breakfast and lunch each day, plus a snack in the afternoon, and before and aftercare is available for parents whose workdays run long. Safety is built into the space: exit doors are keypad protected, high definition cameras cover every classroom and entryway, and we run regular safety drills.
