Our 12-month school program in Ocean, New Jersey sits alongside adult day and residential services for individuals with autism. SEARCH Day Program began in 1971, when parents and professionals came together to establish an appropriate educational setting for children with autism. We continue their work through school and adult programs that address communication, academics and everyday independence. Speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, positive behavioral supports and community-based instruction are part of our services. We adapt learning approaches to the individual and use creative activities in natural settings, where learners can practice everyday skills. Physical education, aquatics, inclusion opportunities and transition services add further settings and experiences within the school program. Our approach to behavior is positive and non-aversive. We respect each person's dignity and preferences and their right to participate in community life. In-home parent support and workshops give families ways to take part. Our professionals collaborate with parents, district child study teams, the New Jersey Department of Education, the Division of Developmental Disabilities and community partners. Adult day and residential services extend our support beyond school, with the school and adult teams providing a continuing path through different stages of life.
