Students can join the marching band and color guard, dance team, drama club, robotics, Envirothon, Earth Club, chess, book club, Rams Runway, the yearbook or TV 36, our student television station. Honor societies for math and science, social studies and world languages sit alongside the National Honor Society, and we also have a Unified Club, an International Club and a Multilingual Ambassador Club. Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in South River

What special needs school options do South River families usually compare?
South River Borough School District operates South River Primary School, South River Middle School, and South River High School while managing the child study team for most local addresses. Families typically review the district continuum first because all three schools listed on this page are part of the borough district. Neighboring Sayreville and Old Bridge each run separate teams, so confirm your enrollment address before relying on another district's referral process.
How do South River parents start a child study team evaluation?
Deliver a dated written referral to your child's principal and the South River special education office when you suspect a disability that may require specialized instruction. After you sign consent, the team evaluates in suspected areas before any eligibility decision. See the South River Referral Process and CST Services page for referral steps, and NJDOE Parental Rights and Engagement for statewide safeguards.
How might a South River student attend private special education with district support?
New Jersey has no K-12 special-needs ESA or voucher, so parent tuition alone does not create a public funding obligation. If the IEP team agrees FAPE requires a private day placement, the district may fund tuition as part of an out-of-district program rather than a family-only choice. Bring progress data and prior intervention records to placement meetings so decisions rest on documented need. Do not treat NJASEPS Connections for Success as K-12 tuition funding; it serves graduates of member schools.
What should I compare across South River Primary, Middle, and High School?
Ask how each building delivers related services, behavior supports, and progress monitoring as students move from primary through high school. Request clarity on class size, inclusion models, and how the district coordinates reevaluations at transition grades. Compare the schools listed on this page with any out-of-district proposals using one checklist before you accept or change placement.
What transportation and transition questions should South River families resolve early?
Ask whether an IEP includes transportation, how routes work for out-of-district placements, and what happens when a student is ready for a less restrictive setting. For students approaching age 18, confirm how the district documents transition goals and community-based instruction. Pair South River team guidance with SPAN Parent Advocacy Network if you want neutral coaching before annual review or reevaluation meetings.
