Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Montclair

How do Montclair families compare public schools and private day programs?
Montclair Public Schools manages child study team evaluations and a continuum of in-district special education services for resident students. This page lists Sawtelle Learning Center and The Deron School of New Jersey, which families often tour when exploring specialized private settings. Essex County neighbors including Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, and Verona each run separate teams, so confirm your enrollment address before you rely on another district's referral process.
How do I request a child study team evaluation in Montclair?
Submit a dated written referral to Montclair pupil services when you suspect a disability that may require specialized instruction. After you sign consent, the team evaluates in suspected areas before any eligibility decision. Montclair publishes department guidance at Montclair Pupil Services, and Child Find information is on Montclair Child Find.
Can Montclair families use state choice programs to pay for private special education?
New Jersey does not operate a private school choice ESA or voucher program for K-12 special education tuition. Public funding for a private placement generally follows an IEP team decision that FAPE cannot be provided in a less restrictive public setting. Parent-paid enrollment at Sawtelle Learning Center or The Deron School of New Jersey is separate from district-funded out-of-district placement unless the team agrees.
How can I compare autism, dyslexia, and language-based learning programs near Montclair?
Ask each program how it defines eligibility, what related services are on site, and how it reports progress to families and the sending district. Request clarity on class structure, behavior supports, and whether the model is inclusive or self-contained. Compare the schools listed on this page using one checklist so you can discuss concrete differences with your Montclair child study team.
What transition planning should Montclair families discuss before high school?
Ask how the IEP documents post-secondary goals, work-based learning, and independent living skills as students approach age 18. Clarify whether an out-of-district placement includes coordinated transition services with the home district. Pair Montclair team guidance with SPAN Parent Advocacy Network if you want neutral coaching before reevaluation or placement meetings.
