Students earn a seat at the Jacqueline M. Walsh School for the Performing and Visual Arts by audition. We are a public arts high school in the Pawtucket School Department, and every student chooses a major in dance, music, theatre, video and film, or visual art. Auditions mirror the work students do here. Visual art applicants draw a still life on site and bring a portfolio of original work, dance applicants learn a dance phrase and take a group class, and musicians perform and complete a music theory assessment and pitch matching. Theatre applicants prepare two memorized monologues, and video and film applicants submit a short narrative video.

Rhode Island Alternative Academy serves students from across Rhode Island who have struggled in traditional school settings. The school pairs standards-based academics with hands-on learning and works with families and sending districts to help students meet graduation requirements. Staff build relationships with students and provide therapeutic support when a student needs it. A behavior-modification approach supports learning throughout the day, while individualized planning helps students move toward their academic and personal goals. The program offers an alternative setting for students who need a different path to continue their education.
