Comparing school options in Springfield

Springfield City School District must identify students with disabilities who live in the district, including children in parochial schools, homeschool, daycare or community preschool. A parent or school staff member can refer. The district has 30 calendar days to respond, and if it suspects a disability, it has 60 days to complete the evaluation.

The district's student services supervisors are assigned by building, including one for non-public schools. If the district does not suspect a disability, it sends a Prior Written Notice explaining why. If an evaluation goes forward, a school psychologist contacts you, and the results are written up in an Evaluation Team Report. Every district building offers a range of settings, from general education with co-teaching to resource rooms and Specialized Learning Classrooms. Your child's IEP team chooses the setting, starting from the least restrictive option.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Springfield

How fast must Springfield City Schools respond to an evaluation request?
The district has 30 calendar days after it receives a request to respond. If it does not suspect a disability, you receive a Prior Written Notice explaining the refusal. If it does, the evaluation must be finished within 60 calendar days, and a school psychologist contacts you to begin. Make the request in writing so the clock is clear. Our IEP prep checklist helps you get ready.
My child attends a parochial school. Does Springfield City still evaluate?
Yes. The district states it is responsible for identifying students with disabilities who reside in the district, including those in non-public parochial schools, homeschool, daycare and community preschool. One student services supervisor covers non-public schools. A parent or school staff member can make the referral, and the same response and evaluation timelines apply.
What classroom settings can an IEP team choose in Springfield?
District buildings offer general education classrooms, co-taught classes with an intervention specialist, resource rooms for part of the day, and Specialized Learning Classrooms taught by an intervention specialist. As much as possible, students attend the school they would attend without a disability. The IEP team decides the setting based on your child's needs and the least restrictive environment rule.
How does preschool special education start for a 3 year old?
In Ohio, a child from age 3 until age 6 can qualify for preschool special education if a disability or delay creates a need for services. A medical diagnosis is not required. Contact the district's special education office to request a preschool evaluation. If you are unsure which district serves your address, Ohio's online School District Lookup tool will tell you.
