Comparing school options in Marysville

Marysville Exempted Village Schools serves preschoolers with disabilities through Mini Monarch Academy, its district preschool. Ohio requires every school district to serve children with disabilities ages three to five, and Marysville places each child along a continuum of options in the least restrictive setting that fits, with services written into an IEP developed by a team.

Mini Monarch Academy posts its preschool eligibility criteria and takes applications for typically developing peer models, so the classrooms mix children with and without disabilities. For school-age students, Marysville's special education department serves learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, autism, hearing and visual impairments, speech and language impairments, and other categories, and it names inclusion in general education classes as its priority. Ohio's Autism Scholarship and Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship are separate state routes that depend on the district IEP.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Marysville

Does Marysville offer special education preschool?
Yes. Mini Monarch Academy is the district's preschool, and Marysville's page states that Ohio districts must serve children with disabilities who are three to five years old. Each child's services come from a team-developed IEP and are delivered in the least restrictive setting that works. Contact the district's preschool office to start an evaluation, and bring any reports you already have.
Can a child without a disability attend Mini Monarch Academy?
Marysville posts a peer application each year, which is how typically developing children join the classrooms as peer models. Peer spots are a separate track from special education eligibility. If you think your child needs services, ask for an evaluation rather than applying as a peer.
How does Marysville decide where a school-age student is served?
The IEP team decides, based on evaluation data. Marysville's special education page says inclusion in general education classes is the district's priority, and it lists programs for learning, emotional, multiple, and developmental disabilities, autism, and other categories. A more separate setting is possible when the team agrees it is needed. Our IEP guide covers how placement is decided.
What if my child's parent cannot take part in special education decisions?
Federal law requires a surrogate parent when a child with a disability has no parent available to advocate. Marysville's special education page points to the Surrogate Parent Training Program in Central Ohio, which trains adults to serve in that role. Relatives and foster families can ask the district how a surrogate is appointed.
