Valley Springs Academy

Premium
Serving Goodyear, AZGrades K-12

Valley Springs Academy is an ESA-approved online special education school for Arizona students in Kindergarten through Grade 11. We serve students with disabilities, including autism and other learning differences, who do better with a structured, predictable school day they can attend from home. Our certified educators teach small virtual class groups and use Specifically Designed Instruction to adapt content, pacing, and lesson delivery to each student. We build lessons on Universal Design for Learning so every student has more than one way to access material and show what they know, and we ground our teaching in John Hattie's Visible Learning research on what moves achievement forward. Academics come first, and we also teach the skills that make learning stick: executive functioning (planning, organization, and self-management), communication and social skills, and practical life skills that build independence. We enroll families statewide, from Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale, and Tempe to Glendale, Surprise, Goodyear, Avondale, Tucson, Flagstaff, Yuma, Kingman, and Show Low. Our team walks families through Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) eligibility, enrollment forms, and documentation, then builds an individualized learning plan with each family before classes start. Our principal, Dr. Tracie Wendorf-Salgado, has taught special education for more than 25 years.

Comparing school options in Goodyear

Goodyear residents are served by four elementary school districts, Avondale, Liberty, Litchfield and Mobile, and two high school districts, Agua Fria Union and Buckeye Union, plus several charter schools. Special education follows the district for your address. The City of Goodyear points families to the Maricopa County School Superintendent, 602-506-3866, to look up their assigned public school.

In Arizona, each public education agency must have written procedures to identify and refer children with disabilities within its boundaries, including children in private schools and homeschools. Charter schools handle identification for their own enrolled students. Litchfield Elementary School District, one of Goodyear's districts, lists a preschool program specialist at 623-535-6068 for Child Find. For babies and toddlers, the Arizona Early Intervention Program, known as AzEIP, takes calls at 1-888-439-5609.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Goodyear

We live in Goodyear but attend a charter school. Who evaluates my child?
The charter school. Arizona rules make charter schools responsible for identifying children with disabilities who are enrolled in the charter. They are not responsible for community outreach because charters have no geographic boundaries. If your child is not enrolled anywhere yet, the district for your address handles Child Find.
Who handles Child Find for Litchfield Elementary families?
Litchfield Elementary School District lists a preschool program specialist at 623-535-6068. Its Child Find page also points families to the Arizona Department of Education Child Find unit at 1-800-352-4558 and to AzEIP at 1-888-439-5609 for infants and toddlers. Confirm first that your Goodyear address is in Litchfield's boundaries.
What happens at age three when my child leaves AzEIP?
Federal rules require a smooth transition from early intervention to preschool special education. A transition meeting reviews existing data, decides whether more assessment is needed and, by the child's third birthday, an IEP is developed. Arizona does not require a new screening if your child already has screening or evaluation records. See our early intervention guide.
Can my child qualify if their grades are fine?
Yes. The Arizona Department of Education says a child advancing from grade to grade can still be eligible for special education, because eligibility is not limited to academic performance. If you see problems with communication, behavior or daily functioning, ask for an evaluation in writing. Our evaluation request guide shows how.
