Valley Springs Academy

Premium
Serving Surprise, AZGrades K-12

Valley Springs Academy is an ESA-approved online special education school for Arizona students in Kindergarten through Grade 11. We serve students with disabilities, including autism and other learning differences, who do better with a structured, predictable school day they can attend from home. Our certified educators teach small virtual class groups and use Specifically Designed Instruction to adapt content, pacing, and lesson delivery to each student. We build lessons on Universal Design for Learning so every student has more than one way to access material and show what they know, and we ground our teaching in John Hattie's Visible Learning research on what moves achievement forward. Academics come first, and we also teach the skills that make learning stick: executive functioning (planning, organization, and self-management), communication and social skills, and practical life skills that build independence. We enroll families statewide, from Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale, and Tempe to Glendale, Surprise, Goodyear, Avondale, Tucson, Flagstaff, Yuma, Kingman, and Show Low. Our team walks families through Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) eligibility, enrollment forms, and documentation, then builds an individualized learning plan with each family before classes start. Our principal, Dr. Tracie Wendorf-Salgado, has taught special education for more than 25 years.

Comparing school options in Surprise

Surprise is served by more than one district. Dysart Unified covers parts of El Mirage, Glendale, Surprise, and Youngtown, and Peoria Unified also has schools in Surprise. Dysart screens children from 2 years 9 months through age 5 for suspected delays; families inside its boundaries can call 623-876-7022, option 2, or fill out the online screening request.

Dysart Unified serves more than 23,000 students across 140 square miles of the Northwest Phoenix area. Its Exceptional Student Services office can be reached at 623-876-7022 or ess@dysart.org. For school-age children already in a Dysart school, concerns start with the school administrator, teacher, or school psychologist. Dysart's special education pages also cover a developmental preschool, a preschool role model program for typically developing peers, interventions, and homebound services. Its school finder helps you check which boundary your address falls in.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Surprise

My child is younger than 2 years 9 months. Who do I call?
Dysart sends families of children younger than 2 years 9 months to the Arizona Early Intervention Program, run by the Department of Economic Security. You can refer online or by phone at 602-532-9960, the number Dysart lists. Once your child nears 2 years 9 months, Dysart's preschool Child Find screening becomes the next step. Our early intervention guide walks through it.
What does Dysart look for at a screening?
Dysart asks whether your child has trouble seeing, hearing, talking or being understood, moving, playing or getting along with others, interacting appropriately, or with thinking and academic skills. A yes to any of these is a reason to schedule a free screening. If the screening shows a concern, the next step is a full evaluation. Our evaluation request guide helps you put concerns in writing.
Does Dysart serve private and home-schooled students?
Yes. Dysart's Child Find covers children who live in its boundaries, including private and home-schooled students, migrant and homeless students, and wards of the state. A child who lives in Dysart but does not attend a Dysart school, or who attends a private school inside Dysart's boundaries, goes through Exceptional Student Services at 623-876-7022, option 2.
What if my Surprise address is in Peoria Unified?
Then Peoria Unified handles Child Find. For a preschooler with concerns about vision, hearing, communication, motor skills, social skills, or health, call 623-773-6685 and ask for a preschool Child Find screening. Peoria Unified's general preschool is fee-based and registered separately, so a screening request is not the same as preschool enrollment. Check your boundary before you call either district.
