Steppingstone School

Listed
Plymouth, MIGrades PreK-8$21,000 per year full-time (2026-27); part-time K $16,800

Steppingstone School has taught gifted children since 1981 in Plymouth, Michigan, and in 2018 we moved back to downtown Plymouth into the Plymouth Arts and Recreation Center. Our neighbors there include a glassblowing studio and the Michigan Philharmonic, and many students stay after school for swim, dance or art classes in the same building. We serve gifted students from early kindergarten through grade 8. Instruction is individualized and self-paced, using acceleration, compacting and flexible pacing, so a student can work years ahead in math, moving into pre-algebra, algebra, geometry and pre-calculus, while practicing handwriting at the right level. Beginning readers learn with the multisensory Orton-Gillingham method before moving to a basal series and Junior Great Books. Every student studies Japanese, and physical education has included swimming, ice skating and cross-country skiing. Full-time tuition for 2026-27 is $21,000, with a part-time kindergarten option. Need-based financial aid is awarded as grants through FAST, and extended day runs from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Comparing school options in Plymouth

Plymouth families are served by Plymouth-Canton Community Schools (P-CCS), whose special education department works with children from infancy through young adulthood. For children under kindergarten age, P-CCS uses Wayne RESA's referral routes, and a Wayne RESA referral is required before services begin. P-CCS offers two programs before kindergarten. Early On helps infants and toddlers from birth to age 3 with developmental delays or with health conditions that put them at risk of delays. For school-age students, Wayne RESA's Child Find inquiry covers kindergarten and older.

My child is in kindergarten. Where do I start?
Wayne RESA's Child Find inquiry covers kindergarten and older, and Michigan guidance makes child find an ongoing duty of the local public agency. Tell your child's P-CCS school in writing what you are seeing and ask for an evaluation. You do not need to name specific tests. Our evaluation guide shows the wording.
Can my child qualify for Early On without a diagnosis?
Yes. P-CCS describes Early On as Michigan's system for infants and toddlers from birth to age 3 who have developmental delays, or who are at risk for delays because of certain health conditions. A formal diagnosis is not the entry point; a delay or a qualifying health condition is. Start with the Wayne RESA referral.
