Achieve Charter Academy

Canton Township, MIGrades K-8Tuition-free

Since opening in 2009, Achieve Charter Academy has been a tuition-free public charter school in Canton for kindergarten through eighth grade, part of the National Heritage Academies network. Each grade band has a designated dean, Grades K-4 and Grades 5-8, and a dean of special education and intervention supports students who need extra help. Our Moral Focus program weaves a monthly virtue such as respect, gratitude or perseverance into everyday lessons. Alongside core subjects, students take art, music, PE and technology, and older grades choose electives like band and vocal music, drawing and painting, environmental studies, and health and fitness. Students ready for more challenge join EXCEL-ERATE for above-grade work in English and math, and middle schoolers may earn high school credit. Field trips range from Greenfield Village and the Detroit Institute of Arts to an overnight fifth grade camp and a Washington, D.C. trip. Our Bulldogs compete in basketball, soccer, cross country, volleyball and cheer starting in fifth grade. Clubs include chess, science, Spanish, and STEAM, coding and robotics, and older students can join the National Junior Honor Society or Student Government.

Any eligible K-8 student may apply, with no entrance exams or interviews, and a random lottery is held when applications outnumber open seats. Comparing school options in Canton Township

Plymouth-Canton Community Schools (P-CCS) serves about 2,300 special education students, plus about 140 in its Act 18 autism program. Its Child Find covers children and young adults from birth to age 26. The special education department lists evaluation requests with an office at 46501 Warren Road in Canton. A Canton mailing address does not by itself decide your district, so check the P-CCS boundary map first.

P-CCS has a supervisor for infant and preschool special education who oversees Early On for ages 0 to 3, preschool special education for ages 3 to 5, and the Allen Early Learning Academy. Its ASD center program runs from early childhood through post-secondary, and a separate program serves students with IEPs ages 18 to 26. The district is part of the Wayne RESA region and follows Wayne County guidance when it decides whether a student has a specific learning disability.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Canton Township

Who runs Early On for Plymouth-Canton families?
P-CCS lists a Supervisor for Infant and Preschool Special Education who also oversees Early On for children ages 0 to 3. If you have concerns about a baby or toddler, you can also call the statewide Early On line at 1-800-EarlyOn (800-327-5966). The same supervisor covers preschool special education for ages 3 to 5, which keeps the move at age three inside one office. See our early intervention guide.
What is the P-CCS ASD center program?
It is the district's autism program, which serves about 140 students and runs from early childhood through post-secondary under a dedicated ASD supervisor. Placement in a center program is an IEP team decision based on evaluation data, and you are part of that team. Ask the team to explain what your child would receive in the center program compared with services in a neighborhood school. Our IEP guide covers placement.
How does a Michigan district count the 30 school days?
The clock starts when the district receives your signed consent and ends with an initial offer of services or a notice of ineligibility. A school day is a day children are in school for instruction, so snow days, teacher workdays, and other non-instructional days do not count. You and the district can extend the timeline, but only in writing, in school days, and on or before the original due date.
Can my child keep receiving services after age 18?
Yes, if the IEP team finds your child still needs them. Michigan serves eligible students up to age 26, and P-CCS runs post-secondary planning for students with IEPs from 18 to 26. The district's Child Find also covers that full age range. Start the conversation about post-secondary goals at an IEP meeting before your child finishes high school. Our IEP prep checklist helps you prepare.
