Stone School Cooperative Preschool

Ann Arbor, MIAges 2-5

Writing during sign-in, sharing an item at show-and-tell and solving problems with friends are part of the preschool day we plan at Stone School Cooperative Preschool. Our teachers work with children from 33 months through age six, combining free-choice play with literacy and math games, small-group activities, art and movement. Children practice self-help skills and independence alongside the academic skills they will use as they grow. Outdoor exploration continues that learning. Our playground has climbing equipment, swings and a sandbox, with space for children to ride tricycles and bikes. Inside and outside, play gives children opportunities to investigate and learn with classmates. Parents participate in classroom life as members of our nonprofit cooperative, which has served Ann Arbor since 1959. That shared participation puts families and teachers alongside one another in children's first school experience. Families choose two, three or five days a week, with morning, afternoon and longer-day options. We can work on customized schedules when classroom space allows. Enrollment follows a first-come, first-enrolled process, and we accept qualifying child-care tuition assistance, including approved Child Care Network of Michigan funding.

Comparing school options in Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor Public Schools provides special education to students with disabilities from birth to age 26. For young children, the district's Westerman Preschool and Family Center assessment team is the starting point: families of children ages 3 to 5 complete the Build Up Michigan form to request an evaluation, and families of younger children make an Early On referral through Washtenaw ISD.

Washtenaw ISD's Build Up page says special education evaluations and services come through the family's resident school district, so a child who lives in Ann Arbor Public Schools is evaluated by AAPS. The AAPS Office of Special Education answers at (734) 994-2318 and links a Parent Advisory Committee for Special Education. The Westerman intake coordinator can be reached at 734-997-1245, extension 56506. For a baby or toddler, the state Early On line is 1-800-327-5966.
