Comparing school options in Dartmouth

Dartmouth Public Schools handles special education for the town through its Student Services office at 508-997-1620. The district runs an integrated preschool at the Andrew B. Cushman and George H. Potter schools, where children with special needs learn alongside peer partners who show typical development.

Massachusetts sets firm timelines once a referral comes in. Under 603 CMR 28.04, the district must send parents written notice within five school days of receiving a referral, and after parent consent it has 30 school days to complete the evaluation. Districts must also evaluate children who are two and a half and may be in an early intervention program, so that services can begin promptly at age three. Families can find Dartmouth's Child Find notification on the Student Services page.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Dartmouth

How is Dartmouth's integrated preschool set up?
The program brings together children who have special needs with peer partners, using a research-based curriculum for literacy, math, social, language, and motor skills. It runs at the Cushman and Potter schools. The three-year-old program is half day, and the four-year-old program is full day. Ask Student Services how your child's IEP services fit within the program.
When should a Dartmouth family in Early Intervention contact the district?
Around age two and a half. Massachusetts rules require districts to evaluate referred children of that age who may be receiving early intervention, so eligible children can start services promptly at three. Districts are encouraged to observe the child in the natural or EI setting and to use current EI assessments when possible. See our early intervention guide.
How are out-of-district placements decided in Massachusetts?
By the Team, which includes parents. The Team first considers in-district settings. If none can provide the IEP services, it identifies an out-of-district placement, states why a less restrictive setting will not work, and keeps the placement as close to home as possible. Options include special education schools approved under 603 CMR 28.09.
How often is a Dartmouth IEP reviewed?
Massachusetts requires the district to review each IEP and the student's progress at least once a year. Every three years, or sooner if needed, the district conducts a full reevaluation with parent consent. You can ask for a Team meeting before the annual review if something is not working. Our IEP guide explains the review process.
