Comparing school options in Mableton

Mableton is in Cobb County, and Cobb County School District's Special Needs Preschool serves eligible three, four, and five year olds who live within district boundaries, with services available on the third birthday. Parents and outside agencies can refer a child by calling the Special Needs Preschool office at 770-426-3331, which mails out a referral packet.

Before Cobb schedules a preschool evaluation, parents complete online registration and supply items such as the child's Social Security card, Georgia immunization and hearing, dental, and vision certificates, proof of birth date, and two proofs of residency. Eligible preschoolers may be served at home, in community preschools, in classrooms at Cobb elementary schools, or in a mix. For school-age students, Cobb assigns a Support and Services Administrator to each school to handle evaluation questions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Mableton

How does Babies Can't Wait hand off to Cobb schools?
Babies Can't Wait is Georgia's early intervention program from birth to the third birthday. Cobb says BCW and the school system share responsibility for a smooth transition, and the district must evaluate and have an IEP in place by the child's third birthday. Ask your BCW service coordinator to start the transition early. Our early intervention guide walks through the steps.
What preschool settings does Cobb use?
Cobb's Special Needs Preschool uses three models. Community-based services bring a special education teacher into community preschools and daycares. Facility-based classes run in many Cobb elementary schools with a teacher and paraprofessional. Home-based services fit children whose health keeps them from other settings. The IEP drives the choice, and transportation is offered for the facility-based model.
Who handles an evaluation request for an older Mableton student?
Cobb assigns a Support and Services Administrator to each school, so contact that person at your child's school to discuss an evaluation. If your child attends a non-profit private school or home school, Cobb directs referrals to its Office of Psychological Services at 770-514-4250. Put your concerns in writing either way. Our evaluation request guide explains what to include.
Can Georgia's Special Needs Scholarship pay for a private school?
It can offset the cost. The Georgia Special Needs Scholarship serves qualifying Georgia public school students who had an IEP or a qualifying 504 Plan in the previous school year, and the money only goes to private schools that participate. GaDOE posts an award calculator and a yearly participating school list. Check eligibility on the GaDOE page before you make plans.
