Venture School

Listed
San Ramon, CAGrades 9-12Tuition-free

Venture is the San Ramon Valley Unified School District's independent study high school for grades 9 to 12. We serve students whose needs are best met through study outside a traditional school setting, and the flexible schedule leaves families room to pursue personal interests beyond the classroom. Study here follows a course-based model. Students have a different teacher for each subject, meet online two days a week on a set schedule, and can add in-person sessions as needed. Expect 20 to 30 hours of work per week, about five hours per core class, with assignments delivered through Google Classroom. Advisory and intervention time is built into every week. Venture is a fully accredited school, and students can complete every course needed for a diploma and for UC/CSU admission. A counselor, social worker, school psychologist and resource specialist are on staff, and students with IEPs may enroll with their IEP team's agreement. Students can join athletics at their attendance-area high school, and meals are provided at no cost.

Comparing school options in San Ramon

San Ramon Valley Unified is a single-district Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA), so one district runs special education from birth to age 22. Its special education department works from 699 Old Orchard Drive, Building D, in Danville. For babies and toddlers, the district operates its own Early Start program, the San Ramon Infant Toddler Early Start (SITES).

SITES serves children from birth to three who show significant developmental delays or have a known low-incidence disability, using an Individualized Family Service Plan under Part C of IDEA. Preschool special education begins at age three and runs to age five. Services can be a preschool class, related services such as speech or occupational therapy, or intensive services in the district's Center for the Early Intervention of Autism. The IEP team decides which services a child receives.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in San Ramon

Why does San Ramon Valley Unified not share a county SELPA?
SRVUSD is its own single-district SELPA. That means the same district that runs your child's school also writes the local plan and operates the full range of programs, from infant services through age 22. For San Ramon families, the district special education department is the main office for referrals, programs, and questions, instead of a county consortium.
What changes when a San Ramon toddler turns three?
Infant and toddler services through SITES follow an Individualized Family Service Plan. At age three, a child who qualifies moves to preschool special education under an IEP. SRVUSD preschool services can include a class, speech or occupational therapy, or targeted services in its autism early intervention center. Start the transition conversation well before the third birthday. Our early intervention guide walks through the steps.
How quickly must SRVUSD respond to a written assessment request?
California Education Code 56043 requires a proposed assessment plan within 15 calendar days of a referral, not counting school vacations longer than five schooldays. You then have at least 15 days to decide. Once you consent, eligibility must be determined and an IEP meeting held within 60 days. Keep a dated copy of your request. Our IEP prep checklist helps you get ready.
Can I ask for an IEP meeting before the annual review?
Yes. Under Education Code 56043, when a parent asks in writing for an IEP meeting to review the program, the district must hold it within 30 calendar days of receiving the request. School breaks longer than five schooldays do not count. Put the request in writing to your child's case manager or the SRVUSD special education office, and note what you want to discuss.
