Los Perales opened in 1965, closed in 1983 when enrollment fell, and housed the Moraga Playhouse and two preschools until a 1995 district bond paid to reopen it. We welcomed students back in 1997 with renovated classrooms and a new multi-use room, and today about 350 students in kindergarten through fifth grade attend this Moraga School District campus. Classes are grouped heterogeneously, with combination classes formed when enrollment calls for them. Credentialed teachers lead art and visual and performing arts, and students also spend time in the science lab, instrumental music, PE and the library. A special education resource program, speech and language services and an English Language Learner program support students, and full-time counselors funded by the Moraga Education Foundation focus on social and emotional wellbeing. Our Panther Club offers before and after school care from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with Spanish, art, hip hop, yoga and a homework club, plus care on select non-school days and a June summer camp.

The Saklan School opened in 1954 as a small Lafayette preschool, moved to its Moraga campus in 1966, and added grades 6 to 8 by the mid-1990s. Today our independent school teaches children from age 3 through eighth grade, and we are accredited by CAIS and WASC. Project Based Learning shapes the day. Middle schoolers use the CPM math program, meet in Advisory groups four times a week, and travel together: Westminster Woods in sixth grade, Oahu in seventh, and Puerto Rico in eighth. Specialist teachers lead visual art for every grade, and students perform in concerts and theater, pair up with buddies across grades, and meet in Family Groups built around the Responsive Classroom approach. Comparing school options in Moraga

Moraga School District and Orinda Union School District share one Early Intervention Program for children ages three to five. It is housed at Camino Pablo Elementary in Moraga, but families start by contacting their own district's special services office, not the school. Both districts belong to the Contra Costa SELPA.

To begin, you request an Early Intervention Information form from the district and return it with proof of residency and a copy of your child's immunization record. Based on that information, qualified staff may screen your child and, when needed, conduct an assessment. Eligibility, goals, placement, and services are set at an IEP meeting, and the IEP must have parent approval before a child can join the program. Many children in the program also attend a community preschool.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Moraga

Where should a Moraga parent send early intervention forms?
Send them to the district special services office, not to Camino Pablo Elementary. The district warns that sending forms straight to the school causes processing delays. Include your name, address, phone number, and your child's age, plus proof of residency and a legible immunization record. Staff then decide whether to screen or assess your child.
Can my child attend a regular preschool and the Early Intervention Program?
Yes, and many do. Moraga describes children in the program as often participating in a community preschool while needing help in one or more developmental areas. Teachers work in small groups on social, motor, speech, and language skills, and parents are encouraged to practice the same skills at home. The IEP team sets the services.
What is the Contra Costa SELPA?
It is a regional partnership of 16 local education agencies in Contra Costa County, including Moraga, Orinda, Lafayette, Acalanes, and the county office of education. Members adopt a shared local plan so special education is available to eligible students across their area. Mt. Diablo, San Ramon Valley, and West Contra Costa unified districts run separate SELPAs.
What should I bring to a Moraga IEP meeting?
Bring your questions, any outside reports, and notes on how your child talks, moves, and plays at home. The team, which includes parents, teachers, and other professionals, reviews the district assessment, decides eligibility, and writes goals. You approve the IEP before services start. Our IEP prep checklist helps organize your notes, and the IEP guide explains each section.
