Valley Springs Academy

Premium
Serving Florence, AZGrades K-12

Valley Springs Academy is an ESA-approved online special education school for Arizona students in Kindergarten through Grade 11. We serve students with disabilities, including autism and other learning differences, who do better with a structured, predictable school day they can attend from home. Our certified educators teach small virtual class groups and use Specifically Designed Instruction to adapt content, pacing, and lesson delivery to each student. We build lessons on Universal Design for Learning so every student has more than one way to access material and show what they know, and we ground our teaching in John Hattie's Visible Learning research on what moves achievement forward. Academics come first, and we also teach the skills that make learning stick: executive functioning (planning, organization, and self-management), communication and social skills, and practical life skills that build independence. We enroll families statewide, from Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale, and Tempe to Glendale, Surprise, Goodyear, Avondale, Tucson, Flagstaff, Yuma, Kingman, and Show Low. Our team walks families through Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) eligibility, enrollment forms, and documentation, then builds an individualized learning plan with each family before classes start. Our principal, Dr. Tracie Wendorf-Salgado, has taught special education for more than 25 years.

Florence High School

Listed
Florence, AZGrades 9-12

Florence High School art students created a September 11 remembrance gallery for social studies classes to visit. Artwork and reflection on hope, unity and kindness connected those subjects in a shared school experience. We use experiences like that alongside classroom technology and our school traditions as students prepare for college, careers and life after graduation. Students can join a sport, a club or both. Participation gives them places to develop their interests alongside their academic coursework, and we encourage them to choose activities that fit those interests. Athletic schedules and school events help families follow that part of campus life. The Gopher Gazette shares student highlights and school news. Our senior resources help students and families keep track of the steps toward graduation, with academic preparation and planning part of the school experience. Other school resources connect families with information about housing, health care and crisis support. We make that practical information available alongside the classroom and extracurricular opportunities students use throughout high school.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Florence

Are there special needs schools near Florence, AZ?
No private special education day school appears on this page, so most Florence students with IEPs learn in FUSD buildings. Florence High School is the main local campus, and federal civil rights data counted 123 students with IEPs and 39 with Section 504 plans among its 822 students in 2021-22. For a fully online setting, Valley Springs Academy is an ESA-approved special education school teaching Arizona students in kindergarten through grade 11.
How do I request a special education evaluation from Florence Unified?
Contact your school psychologist or the FUSD Special Education Department at 480-474-6215, and make the request in writing. The school team then has 15 school days to respond, either with a Review of Existing Data or with prior written notice that it refuses. If testing goes ahead, the team has 60 calendar days from your signed consent to finish and hold an eligibility meeting, plus 30 days to write an IEP if your child qualifies.
My child is homeschooled or in private school. Can FUSD still evaluate?
Yes, if you live inside FUSD boundaries. Register your child as a non-attending student, then submit the district's notification form. FUSD codes these children as non-attending so the state does not report them as enrolled, which protects any ESA funds you use, and the district contacts you within 15 school days.
How does Florence screen preschoolers for delays?
FUSD holds Child Find preschool screenings on set dates through the year, with the 2026-27 calendar running from July into May, for children from 2 years 10 months through 5 years old who live in district boundaries. Call Partners Preschool at 480-987-5380 to book. Children found eligible can attend the district's developmental preschool. For a baby or toddler under 3, refer to the Arizona Early Intervention Program (AzEIP), run by the Department of Economic Security.
How big are classes at Florence High School?
NCES counted 842 students and about 19.1 students per teacher at Florence High in 2023-24. With classes that size, the details of support matter, so ask how many students share a resource room, whether co-teachers join core classes, and how the school schedules speech or counseling minutes.
Can I use an Arizona ESA for an online special education school?
Yes. Arizona law lets ESA money pay tuition at a nonpublic online learning program, plus tutoring and curriculum, which suits Florence families who want a home-based option like Valley Springs Academy. Students eligible for public kindergarten through grade 12 can apply, though some categories also need recent public school enrollment, so look up your child's category on ADE's eligibility page first. With an FUSD disability finding or a 504 plan, the account grows (ADE estimates up to $47,725 a year for autism) and can also pay for educational therapies, an aide and evaluations.
What happens to my child's IEP if I take an ESA?
The ESA agreement says you will not enroll your child in a district or charter school, and it releases FUSD from all obligations to educate your child while the account is open. District IEP services end with that release, although the district still owes evaluations. Weigh that before leaving an IEP at Florence High that gives your child services you depend on.
What should I ask a Florence school before enrolling?
Start with who delivers your child's IEP minutes and in what setting, how teachers report progress, and what transition planning looks like for a teen. For an online program, ask how many live sessions your child gets each week and who helps when your child gets stuck. Bring the latest evaluation so staff can talk about real goals.
