Valley Springs Academy

Serving Cottonwood, AZGrades K-12

Valley Springs Academy is an ESA-approved online special education school for Arizona students in Kindergarten through Grade 11. We serve students with disabilities, including autism and other learning differences, who do better with a structured, predictable school day they can attend from home. Our certified educators teach small virtual class groups and use Specifically Designed Instruction to adapt content, pacing, and lesson delivery to each student. We build lessons on Universal Design for Learning so every student has more than one way to access material and show what they know, and we ground our teaching in John Hattie's Visible Learning research on what moves achievement forward. Academics come first, and we also teach the skills that make learning stick: executive functioning (planning, organization, and self-management), communication and social skills, and practical life skills that build independence. We enroll families statewide, from Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale, and Tempe to Glendale, Surprise, Goodyear, Avondale, Tucson, Flagstaff, Yuma, Kingman, and Show Low. Our team walks families through Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) eligibility, enrollment forms, and documentation, then builds an individualized learning plan with each family before classes start. Our principal, Dr. Tracie Wendorf-Salgado, has taught special education for more than 25 years.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Cottonwood

Is there a school for autistic children in Cottonwood, AZ?
RISE Resource Center is the closest fit on this page. It is an Arizona state-approved private day school serving students from kindergarten through age 22, and federal data classifies it as a special education school. NCES counted 46 students and three full-time teachers in 2021-22, with student assistants and therapists on the team. RISE describes its mission as support for individuals with disabilities broadly, not autism alone, so ask how it supports autistic students specifically, from communication systems to sensory breaks.
How do families pay for RISE Resource Center?
RISE lists several routes, starting with a self-pay payment plan with the school, then a district placement where the sending district pays tuition because it cannot provide the services, an Arizona Empowerment Scholarship Account, or a scholarship from one of the school tuition organizations it works with. State law forbids stacking an ESA and a tuition organization award for the same child in one year, so pick one each year.
Does RISE have a preschool for children with special needs?
Yes. RISE and Shine is a DHS-licensed inclusive preschool for children ages 1 through 5. It follows the OWL curriculum, provides communication and sensory supports for every child, and adds sign language, music, yoga and visits from the local science center. It is contracted with the Department of Economic Security, so ask whether DES funding can cover your child.
How do I get my preschooler screened in Cottonwood?
Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District, based on North Willard Street, offers free developmental screenings for children 3 to 5 who live in its boundaries, are not yet in kindergarten and are not already receiving special education. Screening dates for 2026-27 run monthly from August through April. Complete the district's Child Find form and staff will call if your child meets the criteria. For infants and toddlers, COCSD points families to the Arizona Early Intervention Program (AzEIP).
My school-age child is struggling at a COCSD school. What happens next?
COCSD first refers the student to its Multi-Tiered System of Support intervention team, which reviews data, tries classroom interventions and meets again to check results before recommending a special education referral. That cycle does not block you. Parents may request an evaluation in writing at any point, and once you consent, COCSD has 60 days to complete it.
Can dyslexia or ADHD qualify a Cottonwood student for help?
Yes, and in COCSD the first stop is usually the MTSS intervention team. Dyslexia sits inside the federal definition of a specific learning disability, and ADHD appears in the list for other health impairment, so a Cottonwood student with either can move on to an IEP when reading, focus or work completion keeps slipping. A Section 504 plan fits a child who needs accommodations but not specialized teaching. Either an IEP finding or a 504 plan also raises the yearly amount of an Arizona ESA.
Does RISE serve young adults after high school?
RISE serves students through age 22 and also runs an adult day program for people with developmental and emotional disabilities, focused on life skills, relationships and vocational experience. That continuity can help a teen nearing graduation, so ask how students move from the day school into adult services.
What should I ask before choosing a school in Cottonwood?
Bring questions about how many students and adults share each room, which therapists work on site, and how staff measure progress toward IEP goals. Ask about transition planning for older students. If you use an ESA, get tuition and therapy fees in writing. Families who live farther out can compare RISE with Valley Springs Academy, an online K-11 special education school that accepts ESA funds.
