ABA therapy and autism supports in Oklahoma

Oklahoma has no age or dollar cap on autism treatment in its state insurance law, which makes your private plan the first thing to check. Children on SoonerCare get ABA until age 21, with OHCA approving hours in blocks of one to six months. Many SoonerCare children now sit in a SoonerSelect health plan, so the plan you call depends on how your child is enrolled. Waivers from Oklahoma Human Services are separate and require an intellectual disability diagnosis.

SoonerCare ABA and SoonerSelect plans

SoonerCare covers ABA for members under 21 when a licensed neurologist, developmental pediatrician, psychologist, psychiatrist or similar clinician has diagnosed autism through a full diagnostic evaluation. The child must be medically stable and show functional limits from the diagnosis. OHCA issues prior authorization in units covering one to six months, and ABA in a school or daycare needs OHCA approval. Non-disabled children now enroll in a SoonerSelect health plan, so ask the plan which of its ABA agencies are in network.

Oklahoma's autism coverage law, 36 O.S. § 6060.21

Health benefit plans and the Oklahoma Employees Health Insurance Plan must cover autism screening, diagnosis and treatment, and insurers cannot drop or refuse a person because of an autism diagnosis. The current text sets no age limit and no ABA hour or dollar cap, after amendments in 2019 and 2022. Coverage carries no visit limits, and ABA includes services provided or supervised by a BCBA, a BCaBA or a licensed doctoral-level psychologist. Insurers can review the treatment plan once a year. Self-funded employer plans follow federal ERISA rules, so ask HR whether yours is fully insured in Oklahoma.

DDS Community and In-Home Supports waivers

Oklahoma Human Services runs the Community Waiver (ages 3 and up) and the In-Home Supports Waiver for Children (ages 3 through 17). Both serve people with a primary diagnosis of intellectual disability, diagnosed by a licensed psychologist, so autism alone does not qualify a child. DDS handles applications in chronological order. SoonerStart Early Intervention, birth to 3

SoonerStart is Oklahoma's early intervention program for infants and toddlers from birth to 3 who meet the state definition of developmental delay. It runs through the Oklahoma State Department of Health in partnership with the State Department of Education. Any concerned person can refer a child through the online SoonerStart referral link on the Health Department site, and the program lists (405) 426-8494 for questions.

Oklahoma behavior analyst licensing

Oklahoma licenses Board Certified Behavior Analysts and certifies assistant behavior analysts under 59 O.S. § 1928, and SoonerCare requires its BCBAs to hold that license. Senate Bill 1557 moves oversight of the profession to the Oklahoma State Board of Examiners of Psychologists on November 1, 2026, with no immediate change to existing licenses. SoonerCare also requires registered behavior technicians to receive supervision for at least 5% of their monthly hours.

Lindsey Nicole Henry Scholarship for students with special needs

The Lindsey Nicole Henry (LNH) Scholarship helps students with special needs in PK3 through 12th grade pay tuition and eligible expenses at an approved private school. A child qualifies with an IEP or ISP from a public school, a finding of eligibility for special education under IDEA, or an Individualized Service Plan written by Oklahoma Human Services. Secure enrollment at an approved school first, apply through the PCG Scholar portal, and renew every year. State guidance lists therapies and one-on-one aides among eligible expenses.

ABA supply clusters in the Oklahoma City metro (Oklahoma City, Edmond, Norman, Moore, Yukon and Mustang) and in the Tulsa area, with a smaller market in Lawton. Before you tour a clinic, confirm it takes your child's coverage: a SoonerCare child needs an agency contracted with OHCA or with the child's SoonerSelect plan, and a privately insured child needs an agency in the insurer's network. Families outside these metros can request a match statewide.
