Washington Connections Academy

Lacey, WAGrades K-12Tuition-free

Washington Connections Academy is a tuition-free online public school for students in kindergarten through 12th grade anywhere in Washington, with our school office in Lacey. We run as two programs: one authorized with the Mary M. Knight School District for grades K to 8, and one with the Goldendale School District for grades K to 12. Both offer the same teachers, courses and services. Our Washington-certified teachers are trained in online instruction, and a parent or caregiver serves as each student's Learning Coach at home. Lessons mix live LiveLesson sessions with offline work, and families can set a flexible daily schedule. Students with IEPs receive consultation, curriculum accommodation and modification, direct instruction, and related services determined by the IEP team. High school students can earn dual credit through Running Start, take SAT and ACT prep, recover credits in summer, and choose electives such as world languages. Students also join online clubs, National Honor Society, Connections eSports and optional in-person field trips.

Comparing school options in Lacey

North Thurston Public Schools, based in Lacey, offers a free developmental screening to children ages two years ten months to five years old who live in district boundaries. Families start with the district's online Child Find intake form, and a Child Find team member follows up. For children younger than two years eight months, NTPS points families to a local early support intake.

NTPS separates preschool screening from preschool enrollment: a screening does not guarantee a place in the district's preschool program. Once a child is in school, every NTPS building has its own Child Find referral team for preschool through 12th grade. Start with your child's teacher and the school psychologist. Washington rules then apply: 25 school days for the district to decide whether to evaluate, and 35 school days after consent to finish.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Lacey

Is my preschooler old enough for an NTPS screening?
NTPS screens children from two years ten months through five years old, measured on or before August 31, who live within district boundaries. Fill out the district's Child Find intake form and a team member will contact you. If you live outside NTPS, the district asks you to contact your own school district instead.
Does a screening mean my child gets an NTPS preschool spot?
No. NTPS states that screening does not guarantee placement in its preschool program. A screening shows whether a full special education evaluation makes sense. If your child is evaluated and found eligible, the IEP team decides services and setting. Our IEP guide explains that meeting step by step.
Who handles a referral once my child is in school?
Each NTPS school has a Child Find referral team covering preschool through 12th grade. Contact your child's teacher and the school psychologist to start. Put the request in writing; Washington accepts email. The district then has 25 school days to decide whether it will evaluate, and it must explain a refusal in Prior Written Notice.
What about a baby or young toddler in Lacey?
NTPS directs families of children younger than two years eight months to a local early support intake listed on its Child Find page. Washington's ESIT program serves eligible children from birth to age 3, with services at home, in child care or in the community. Our early intervention guide covers the move to preschool services.
