Building Blocks of Southern Virginia

Building Blocks of Southern Virginia is an accredited private day school in Danville for children ages 2 to 14 with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. We opened in 2004 as a division of the Center for Pediatric Therapies, and a second Building Blocks campus now serves Central Virginia from Lynchburg. Virginia's Department of Education licenses the school, and the Virginia Association of Independent Special Education Facilities (VAISEF) accredits it.

Applied Behavior Analysis is the core of our instruction, and each child's program is built from his or her IEP. Teachers also use Verbal Behavior, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), natural environment teaching, social skills groups with social stories, and sensory integration. Our Danville team includes a special education teacher, a BCBA and lead behavior technicians.

Children in public school usually reach us through their district, which decides whether Building Blocks is the right private day placement. Our Extended School Year program runs from mid-June to early August with individual sessions, group sessions and social skills training, and children with autism and an IEP can attend it without enrolling during the school year.
