Overview
The Learning Center (TLC) opened in Fall 2020 inside The McGillis School, an independent K-8 school in Salt Lake City. It serves students with language-based learning differences including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. Students spend their core academic day (reading, writing, spelling, math, and history) in a grade-level TLC homeroom with a 6:1 student to teacher ratio, generally three to eight students per teacher.
Instruction is explicit and multisensory, building auditory, visual, and tactile pathways to learning. Teachers are trained in Orton-Gillingham practices including the Wilson Reading System, Lindamood-Bell learning processes, and Multisensory Math, and they partner with literacy specialists to teach skills in their smallest components so each student masters one level before moving to the next.
TLC students are fully part of the wider McGillis community. They join grade-level peers for science, art, music, physical education, library, drama, and culture and ethics, as well as lunch, recess, field trips, all-school events, and after-school activities. Alongside academics, the program teaches self-advocacy and independent learning strategies, and most students transition into traditional programs after two to three years. Admission requires an independent psycho-educational evaluation completed within the past two years, and cognitive ability in the average to superior range. The program is not designed for students whose difficulties stem primarily from emotional or behavioral problems, below average cognitive ability, autism, or traumatic brain injury.

Challenger School has operated private campuses since 1963 and runs 27 locations across the West, including six in the Salt Lake City area. The Salt Lake campus sits at 1325 South Main Street with easy freeway access, safety gates, a security guard, and hours from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The campus offers preschool, kindergarten, and elementary school. Preschool programs mix music, reading, math, art, drama, social time, science, and physical activity. The kindergarten program balances play and structured learning, and elementary students are taught to think critically within a values-based curriculum. Admission requires a campus visit, an in-person interview and evaluation, and a placement test for kindergarten through eighth grade applicants. Children must be at least 2 years 9 months for preschool in Utah and toilet trained. Acceptance is not guaranteed, and class placement is based on scholastic expectations, student motivation, and comportment.
