Rowland Hall Lower School (McCarthey Campus)

The McCarthey Campus at 720 Guardsman Way holds Rowland Hall's Beginning School, covering 3PreK through kindergarten, and its Lower School, covering grades 1 through 5. Rowland Hall is an independent Salt Lake City school in operation since 1867. Learning support here is carried by division learning specialists. In the Beginning School a specialist works inside each classroom across the year, tracking language, sensory and motor skills, and early literacy and math. In the Lower School, specialists consult with classroom teachers, deliver whole-group and small-group instruction, and run short-term one-on-one check-ins. Justine Gallet covers both divisions as Beginning and Lower School learning specialist, with Melina Vermetten as a second Lower School specialist.

Support is open to any student, not only those with a diagnosed learning difference. As an independent school Rowland Hall writes neither IEPs nor 504 plans. When a family supplies an evaluation report from an outside specialist, the teacher, learning specialist, family, and evaluator meet to debrief, and the specialist then drafts a support plan setting out the student's strengths, needs, classroom strategies, and accommodations. Those plans are revised as the child grows. The school characterizes its approach as neurodiversity affirming.

Tuition for 2026-2027 ranges from $8,950 for three half days of 3PreK to $25,750 for five full days, then $28,950 for kindergarten and $29,950 across grades 1 through 5, with a one-time $2,000 matriculation fee for new families. Need-based tuition assistance is offered from kindergarten upward but not for preschool; in 2025 the school awarded $5.3 million to 234 students, with grants averaging more than half of full tuition. Families begin with an inquiry or a scheduled campus visit, then apply; the parallel aid application runs through Clarity and closes January 31 for new families.
