St. Anthony School Programs began in 1921 as an orphanage in Oakmont and turned to educating students with special needs in 1953. Today we serve students ages 5 to 21 with Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder and other special needs inside Catholic schools of the Diocese of Pittsburgh: four K-8 elementary sites, three high schools and a post-secondary program at Duquesne University. Each elementary resource room is led by a certified special education teacher with trained paraprofessionals and holds no more than 13 students. Children join same-age homerooms and spend about half of each day in general education classes such as art, gym, music and religion. Speech therapy and social and motor skills instruction are built in. In high school, the day splits roughly into thirds: resource room, inclusion classes and vocational training at local businesses with job coaches. Our post-secondary students, ages 18 to 21, take functional academics on the Duquesne campus, learn cooking and laundry at an off-campus apartment, and ride buses and the T to two to five job sites a week. Financial aid and diocesan scholarships are available.
