Propel Schools - McKeesport

Listed
McKeesport, PAGrades K-8Tuition-free

Propel McKeesport opened in 2005 as the second school in the Propel network, and today about 400 scholars in kindergarten through eighth grade learn in our building on Versailles Avenue. Propel is a network of 13 free public charter schools in Allegheny County that began in 2003 in the basement of a Homestead hospital. Our school day and year run longer than most public schools, adding about 25 percent more instructional time than the state requires. Each day includes a three-hour literacy block covering reading, writing and social studies and a 90-minute math block, with teachers planning around specific learning targets based on Pennsylvania and Common Core standards. Certified instructors teach visual arts, music, dance and theater, and a long partnership with The Frick Pittsburgh brings scholars hands-on art and history experiences. Breakfast and lunch are free for every scholar, and our free afterschool program includes snacks or dinner with academic enrichment. Middle schoolers compete in volleyball, basketball and track and field in the Propel Middle School League. Propel enrolls scholars with IEPs, admits new families by lottery and gives siblings priority.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Mckeesport

How does MASD decide a student needs an evaluation?
MASD reviews health screenings, kindergarten academic and speech screenings, report cards, test scores, and information from parents and outside agencies. If needs show up, the school may recommend changes to the regular program or document the need for further evaluation. You do not have to wait: send a written request to the principal or the Director of Special Education. See our evaluation request guide.
How do I get my preschooler screened by the AIU?
Call AIU Preschool Early Intervention at 412-394-5904 to schedule a screening; screenings run throughout Allegheny County all year. If results suggest a delay, the AIU asks permission to evaluate with a Permission to Evaluate form and the Procedural Safeguards Notice. The evaluation report goes to parents within 60 calendar days. Our early intervention guide explains the steps.
What happens after an AIU evaluation finds a delay?
If your child shows a delay of at least 25% of chronological age in one or more areas and needs specially designed instruction, the AIU develops an IEP within 30 calendar days. The team includes parents, a special education teacher or therapist, a regular education teacher, and a local education agency representative. Before services start, you receive a Notice of Recommended Educational Placement.
Is DART the same as AIU Preschool Early Intervention?
Yes. The AIU says its Preschool Early Intervention Program was formerly known as the AIU DART Program and DART Early Intervention, so older paperwork may still use that name. The program serves children ages three to five, or school entry age, who live in suburban Allegheny County outside the City of Pittsburgh School District.
