Sundborn Children's House began with 18 children inside the Fairmount School building in North Albany. Today we are a non-profit, independent Montessori school serving about 50 children ages 2.5 to 6 in two Primary classrooms, set in two houses on one large yard with gardens, hills, a small bridge, and trees and rocks for climbing. Most children start between 2.5 and 3 and stay with us until they begin first grade. Our multi-age classrooms follow the child: lessons are individual and hands-on, based on each child's interests and readiness. Children wash dishes, sew buttons, write stories, work with math materials, and tend the garden, and art and music are woven into language, geography and science work. Families choose a half day from 8 a.m. to noon, a full day to 3 p.m. for older children who no longer nap, or limited all-day spots to 5 p.m. with extended care in a small group. We run year-round from July to June with short breaks, and we keep our rates in line with other centers in the area. Our community also supports the Nhimbe Preschool in Zimbabwe.
