Highland Elementary opened in 1939 as Stow Grade School, built as a Public Works project, and a plaque marking that history still hangs in our main entrance hall. Today we serve students in kindergarten through 4th grade as one of six elementary schools in Stow-Munroe Falls City Schools, with students moving on to Lakeview Intermediate, Kimpton Middle School and Stow-Munroe Falls High School. Our teachers cover the core subjects along with enrichment activities, and our school culture centers on kindness, respect and responsibility. Our PTA brings assemblies such as Professor Wow to the building and helps with classroom celebrations, and we mark Anti-Bullying Month each October.

Lakeview Intermediate School

Stow, OHGrades K-8Tuition-free

Lakeview Intermediate School is the home of 5th and 6th grade in the Stow-Munroe Falls City School District. The building is designed for the move from elementary to middle school, giving students a strong academic foundation while asking them to take on more independence and responsibility. Behavior expectations follow Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) through Lakeview PAWS: put safety first, act responsibly and show respect. Teachers teach, model and reinforce these expectations in classrooms, the library, the computer lab, the cafeteria, the playground and on the school bus. Students recognized as role models are announced during morning announcements, their families are notified, and they receive a paw-themed gift from the office. Students rotate through specials, use our library media center, and can play in the grades 5 and 6 orchestra, which performs a winter concert. Breakfast and lunch are served daily.

Stow-Munroe Falls City Schools runs Lil' Bulldogs, its developmental preschool for children ages 3 to 5 with disabilities, at Indian Trail Elementary School. Four half-day sessions run Monday through Thursday, and related services such as speech and language therapy are added when a child needs them. Peer role models without disabilities are assigned to every classroom after their own screening.

The district's Special Services Department handles IEPs, Section 504 plans, gifted services, and intervention programs. It lists the Summit County Educational Service Center as a partner that provides programming to member schools, including Stow-Munroe Falls, and points families to State Support Team Region 8 and its Parent Access Collaborative. The district has reported using federal IDEA-B money to help pay tuition for special education students attending specialized programs outside the district. Residents can comment on how the district spends those federal special education funds.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Stow

How does a child enter Lil' Bulldogs?
There are two routes. A child age 3 to 5 who shows delays in communication, motor, social-emotional or behavior, adaptive, cognitive, vision, or hearing skills enters as a preschooler with a disability after a screening and evaluation that uses play, a parent interview, and testing. A child without special needs can apply as a peer model, with a separate screening and rules such as being fully toilet trained.
Does Ohio require an eye exam for a first IEP?
Yes. Ohio law requires a full eye exam by a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist for each student found eligible and starting an IEP for the first time. An exam done within nine months before the eligibility decision counts. Parents pay for it, not the district. A child cannot be denied services for lacking the exam, but tell the special education office once it is done.
What is State Support Team Region 8?
It is one of Ohio's regional state support teams. Stow-Munroe Falls lists it as a source of free technical support and training that helps families take part in their child's education, and links to its Parent Access Collaborative. Families often use it to learn about IEPs before a meeting. Use it alongside our IEP prep checklist to organize your questions.
How long does the district have to answer an evaluation request?
Ohio gives the district 30 days from your request to decide whether to evaluate and send you written notice. After you consent, the evaluation and eligibility decision must be done within 60 days, and an IEP must follow within 30 days for an eligible child. Put your request in writing and keep a copy. Our evaluation request guide shows what to include.
