Comparing school options in Schenectady

In Schenectady City School District, the first contact for a possible special education need is your school's psychologist. Districtwide questions go to the Director of Special Education at 518-881-3413. For children ages 3 to 5, Schenectady County Public Health Services contracts with evaluators, and the district's Committee on Preschool Special Education reviews the results.

Schenectady County lists seven school district CPSE offices: Schenectady City, Niskayuna, Mohonasen, Schalmont, Scotia-Glenville, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, and Duanesburg. Use the one tied to your home address. Preschool services generally follow the school calendar, and a six-week summer program is available for children who qualify, to prevent substantial regression of skills. Families can also call the county's Family Health Unit for information.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Schenectady

Who should I contact first about a Schenectady student?
The district asks families who think a child may qualify, or who have questions about evaluation, to contact the school's psychologist. A written referral can also go to the CSE chairperson or the principal, and New York requires a principal to forward it to the chair right away. Our guide on requesting an evaluation shows what to include.
How do preschool evaluations work in Schenectady County?
Children ages 3 to 5 are referred to their district's CPSE. Evaluations are done by providers that contract with Schenectady County Public Health Services, and a child must be found eligible to receive services. After the evaluation, the CPSE meets at the school district to review results and decide eligibility and services. Our early intervention guide covers the years before 3.
Is there summer preschool special education?
Yes, for children who qualify. Schenectady County says CPSE services generally follow a school calendar, but a six-week summer program is available to prevent substantial regression of a child's skills. Ask the CPSE whether summer services belong on your child's IEP at the annual review. Our IEP prep checklist helps you prepare.
Which disability categories does the district list?
Schenectady City School District lists the IDEA categories, including autism, deafness, developmental delay, emotional disturbance, hearing impairment, intellectual disability, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment, other health impairment, specific learning disability, speech or language impairment, traumatic brain injury, and visual impairment. A need caused mainly by unfamiliarity with English does not qualify on its own.
