About The New York Institute for Special Education - Bronx

The New York Institute for Special Education is a private nonprofit school in the Bronx for children who are blind or have low vision, and for preschoolers with developmental delays. Founded in 1831, it is a New York 4201 school.

The Schermerhorn Program serves students ages 5 to 21 who are legally blind. Students follow diploma-track or modified academic programs, with an optional five-day residential placement. Related services can include orientation and mobility, speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, adaptive physical education, and career education on campus and in the community.

The Readiness Program is a full-day, center-based preschool for Bronx children ages 3 to 5 referred through the Committee on Preschool Special Education. Classes are small, with a teacher and two assistants, and include speech, occupational, and physical therapy plus counseling when the IEP requires them.
