Charles Hackley Middle School
Charles Hackley Middle School serves grades 6 to 8 for Muskegon Public Schools on East Laketon Avenue. Our 6th graders take a daily Enrichment Hour that builds math and reading skills through i-Ready, along with a Seminar class built on CharacterStrong lessons, current events and career exploration in Xello. Students who test ahead move into honors courses, including Algebra I for high school credit, and students who are behind get a Reading and Math Strategies class. Students can join band, orchestra or choir, and the elective wheel includes design thinking, coding, Intro to Spanish, speech, art, Genius Hour, math games and physical education. Hackley Community Care health staff work inside our building, and the 21st Century after-school program offers tutoring, special classes, supper and a bus ride home Monday through Thursday. Our Big Red athletes compete in football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, wrestling, track and competitive cheer. Clubs include the Student Leadership Council, coding club, robotics, esports, and FoodCorps cooking and gardening in our courtyard raised beds and greenhouse. Students in grades 3 to 11 can also apply to the district's Poppen Program for funded lessons in visual art, music, dance and theater.
Marquette Elementary School
Marquette Elementary School serves kindergarten through fifth grade families on Bennett Street in Muskegon as part of Muskegon Public Schools. We are a Title I school, and our building includes a STEAM lab, a gym, a cafeteria and outdoor play space. Health care is right inside our building. Hackley Community Care runs a School Wellness Program at Marquette, where a school nurse and a licensed behavioral health provider offer health screenings, health education and counseling with signed parental consent. Mobile dental visits, kindergarten oral health checks and vision screenings also come to the school during the year. When classes end, many of our students stay for the 21st Century after-school program, which runs into the early evening. Students in grade 3 and up can apply to the Nancy K. Poppen Program, which pays for weekly lessons in visual art, music, dance, theatre or creative writing for Big Red students from lower-income families. Kindergarten intervention and the district's Read by Grade Three supports help our youngest readers get a strong start.
Muskegon High School
Every Muskegon High School student chooses a career academy. Ninth graders start in our Freshman Academy, meeting weekly for career exploration and attending the Future of You career conference before picking a pathway. In grades 10 to 12, students join either the Academy of Health and Human Services or the Academy of Industry, Technology and Design. Pathways include health sciences, public service and education, hospitality and tourism, criminal justice and first response, engineering and advanced manufacturing, skilled trades, digital media and design, and business and entrepreneurship. State Career Tech Education Expansion grants fund our robotics, simulation equipment, student business incubator and media studios. Students take college courses on our campus through Baker College, Michigan State University and Muskegon Community College, and complete job shadows and work-based learning with local employers. Hackley Community Care runs a school-based health center on campus with parent consent. We also have a counseling department, peer mediation, athletics and the Poppen Programs in the Arts.
