Burger Transition Center

Listed
Garden City, MIAges 18-22Tuition-free

Burger Transition Center serves the post-secondary students of the Burger Program, Garden City Public Schools' center-based school for students from across Western Wayne County with an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. The program runs in two buildings: Burger Baylor School serves grades 1 to 12, and our Maplewood Street building serves students after high school as they work toward independence, self-fulfillment and a productive role in their community. Our students are the BTC Cougars. Practical work is part of the program. Students in our Retail Prep class assess, organize and display donations in the BTC Pantry, a food, clothing and sundries pantry for community members in need, which builds retail skills while they help their neighbors. Admission comes through a referral from the student's resident district special education department, after less restrictive options in the district or other regional ASD classrooms have been reviewed. The intake packet includes student profiles, a parent questionnaire and the district's IEP assessment, and our social workers help families with questions about the process.

Comparing school options in Garden City

Garden City Public Schools offers an Early Childhood Developmental Delay Program for children ages 3 to 6 and K-12 services at every school, including speech and language therapy, teacher consultants, and resource rooms. The district says its IEP teams consider programs in Garden City and in partner districts across Wayne County, so a placement may sit outside the city.

Garden City states that an education label does not determine placement. The IEP team weighs how intense and specialized a student's needs are and how best to meet IEP goals. A Wayne County center program for students with autism requires a referral from the resident district's director of special education, a referral process, and a showing that less restrictive options were tried first. Wayne RESA's hotline, 734-334-1393, handles referrals before kindergarten.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Garden City

Does my child's eligibility category decide the classroom?
No. Garden City Public Schools says the education label does not determine placement. The IEP team bases placement on the intensity and specialization of the student's needs and on how best to meet the IEP goals. Come to the meeting ready to describe what support your child needs during the day; our IEP prep checklist helps.
Can a Garden City student attend a program in another district?
Yes. At each age and grade, Garden City's IEP team considers programs within the district and throughout its Wayne County partnership districts. For a county center program for students with autism, the resident district's director of special education must make the referral, and less restrictive options must be exhausted first. Parents take part in that IEP decision.
Who serves infants and toddlers in Garden City?
Garden City lists early intervention for birth to 3 through a neighboring district and a Wayne County partnership program. The simplest starting point is Wayne RESA's referral hotline, 734-334-1393, or 1-800-EARLYON, which routes children from birth through 2 years 10 months to Early On. Our early intervention guide explains what happens next.
What K-12 special education services are at Garden City schools?
Garden City lists speech and language therapy and teacher consultant services at every school, a resource room program for grades K-6 covering mild to moderate needs across disability areas, and cross-categorical self-contained programs. Related services are available at all ages when the IEP team calls for them. Ask the school which services are offered on that campus.
