Barrier-Free is a Maryland nonprofit based at 7520 Main Street #103 in Historic Downtown Sykesville. It runs inclusive arts, self-advocacy, and social programming for adults 18 and older, with an emphasis on neurodivergent individuals, including people with autism and intellectual or developmental disabilities. The organization draws participants and families from Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, and serves a wide range of independence and social ability levels. Lauren Burr is the Executive Director. Programs run across several formats. The Inclusive Theater Companies use a multi-step, drama-therapy-based approach where actors create, rehearse, and perform original musicals. The Life Skills & Social Studio uses an integrated-arts model built around interpersonal interaction, authentic practice, and group collaboration. Other offerings include one-on-one Individual Skill Coaching, Expressive Arts Classes (held in Westminster and Sykesville, each ending with a sharing or project for families), a Music Studio, monthly Social Clubs that take Studio members on community outings, and OUT Loud, a peer-support group for neurodiverse LGBTQ+ adults. The Life Skills & Social Studio serves neurodivergent adults 21 and older and is designed around ages 21 to 40. Each Studio visit is a three-hour session split into a social practice and integration segment, an expressive arts opportunity, and a life-skills practice block, plus "Community Connections" time spent in downtown Sykesville at parks, shops, eateries, and volunteer sites. The Studio operates Monday through Friday, 12 to 6pm, with options to attend 12 to 3, 3 to 6, or the full 12 to 6. Registration happens weekly, so families are not locked into fixed days, and payment is by credit or debit card or check. Current Studio rates are $42 for a three-hour session and $74 for six hours, increasing to $45 and $80 on July 1, 2026. New participants get a free two-session trial, and first-time families complete a new-member intake before booking weekly sessions. The organization works with families directly on funding options, invoices, and scheduling. Contact is info@barrierfreemd.com or 301-799-8669.
