About PHILLIPS School of Maryland
PHILLIPS Programs runs its Laurel Campus at 8920 Whiskey Bottom Rd in Laurel, MD, a nonpublic special education day school serving students ages 8 to 21 (roughly grades 3 to 12) from Maryland and Washington, D.C. The school works with students whose academic, behavioral, emotional, and social needs were not met in traditional settings. Instruction happens in small, self-contained classes led by teachers and para-educators, with lessons differentiated to each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). The approach is described as strengths-based and trauma-informed, and the campus uses a multi-disciplinary support model.
On-site clinical and related services include counseling and family support, speech-language therapy for communication and social skills, and occupational therapy covering sensory needs, fine motor skills, and executive functioning. The behavioral team includes Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs), and staff use de-escalation and positive behavioral support techniques. Social and emotional learning is taught directly, covering self-management, self-awareness, relationship skills, and decision-making. Classrooms are equipped with Smartboards, Chromebooks, and assistive listening tools, and the program uses virtual reality tools to teach social, behavioral, and life skills to neurodiverse students. Campus features include art rooms, libraries, technology labs, gyms, student gardens, playgrounds, sensory-friendly rooms, and structured movement breaks.
The Laurel Campus also offers Career and Technical Education pathways. These include Growing Futures (culinary arts training in a commercial kitchen plus an agri-enterprise pathway built around an on-campus hydroponic farm) and Building Futures (building-trades training with OSHA and industry credentialing in areas like construction, carpentry, and plumbing). Work-readiness programming adds pre-vocational activities, on-campus jobs, internships, and community-based work experiences.
PHILLIPS is approved by the Maryland State Department of Education to operate as a nonpublic school and approved for placement by Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. It is a member of the Maryland Association of Nonpublic Special Education Facilities (MANSEF) and the National Association of Private Special Education Centers (NAPSEC). Referrals and admissions are handled at LaurelAdmissions@phillipsprograms.org. Laurel is one of several PHILLIPS campuses across the Washington, D.C. metro area.

Julia Brown School - Laurel
Julia Brown Schools - Laurel is the original campus of a family-owned Montessori school that Julia and Charles Brown opened in 1967, making it the first of four JBS locations (the others are in Columbia, Silver Spring, and Olney). The Laurel school sits just off Route 1 in a quiet residential neighborhood at 9450 Madison Avenue, in a one-story building with spacious classrooms and two large playgrounds. It serves families across Howard and Prince George's County and is roughly 5 minutes from downtown Laurel, 10 minutes from Beltsville, and 15 minutes from Fort Meade, Savage, and Burtonsville. The school enrolls children from 15 months to 9 years old across four programs that run five days a week. The Toddler program (15 months to 2.5 years) is a modified Montessori class focused on early independence, language development, and toilet training. The Primary (Pre-K) program (ages 2.5 to 5, for potty-trained children) runs as a morning class (8:30 to 11:15 AM) or afternoon class (12:15 to 3:00 PM), with full-day options available by adding Before and After Care plus summer. The Kindergarten year (age 5) serves as a capstone with added subjects like Coding and Latin. The Elementary program (ages 6 to 9) is a mixed first, second, and third grade class that meets the requirements of the public school system. Before and After Care supports working families, and a summer program is offered to current JBS students. Classrooms are led by certified Montessori Directresses who guide and observe rather than lecture, presenting lessons and stepping in to redirect a child's work. The curriculum follows the authentic Montessori method (the co-founder earned her Montessori degree from the London St. Nicholas Montessori Training Centre in 1966 and was taught by two women trained by Maria Montessori), and adds Latin, Coding, and P.E. lessons that are particular to JBS. As a Montessori environment built around hands-on, child-led learning and individual pacing, the setting can suit children with language-based learning differences or twice-exceptional profiles, though the site does not list dedicated special-education or therapeutic services. All JBS programs, including the Laurel campus, are fully accredited by the Maryland State Department of Education. The school marked its 50th anniversary in 2017 and is owner-operated by members of the Brown family. Families can contact the Laurel campus to schedule a tour.
