Overview

Julia Brown Schools - Laurel is the original campus of a family-owned Montessori school that Julia and Charles Brown opened in 1967, making it the first of four JBS locations (the others are in Columbia, Silver Spring, and Olney). The Laurel school sits just off Route 1 in a quiet residential neighborhood at 9450 Madison Avenue, in a one-story building with spacious classrooms and two large playgrounds. It serves families across Howard and Prince George's County and is roughly 5 minutes from downtown Laurel, 10 minutes from Beltsville, and 15 minutes from Fort Meade, Savage, and Burtonsville.

The school enrolls children from 15 months to 9 years old across four programs that run five days a week. The Toddler program (15 months to 2.5 years) is a modified Montessori class focused on early independence, language development, and toilet training. The Primary (Pre-K) program (ages 2.5 to 5, for potty-trained children) runs as a morning class (8:30 to 11:15 AM) or afternoon class (12:15 to 3:00 PM), with full-day options available by adding Before and After Care plus summer. The Kindergarten year (age 5) serves as a capstone with added subjects like Coding and Latin. The Elementary program (ages 6 to 9) is a mixed first, second, and third grade class that meets the requirements of the public school system. Before and After Care supports working families, and a summer program is offered to current JBS students.

Classrooms are led by certified Montessori Directresses who guide and observe rather than lecture, presenting lessons and stepping in to redirect a child's work. The curriculum follows the authentic Montessori method (the co-founder earned her Montessori degree from the London St. Nicholas Montessori Training Centre in 1966 and was taught by two women trained by Maria Montessori), and adds Latin, Coding, and P.E. lessons that are particular to JBS. As a Montessori environment built around hands-on, child-led learning and individual pacing, the setting can suit children with language-based learning differences or twice-exceptional profiles, though the site does not list dedicated special-education or therapeutic services.

All JBS programs, including the Laurel campus, are fully accredited by the Maryland State Department of Education. The school marked its 50th anniversary in 2017 and is owner-operated by members of the Brown family. Families can reach the Laurel campus at 301-498-0604 to schedule a tour.

Christian Academy of Laurel

Laurel, MD

Christian Academy of Laurel is a private Christian school in Laurel, Maryland that has educated students in the area since 1971. It was known as First Baptist School of Laurel until the 2019-2020 school year, when it took the Christian Academy of Laurel name to reflect a student body and staff drawn from many Christian denominations. The school serves children from Pre-K through 8th grade and runs on a Biblically based curriculum, with the stated aim of partnering with parents in their children's education and faith. Class sizes are kept small. The school caps the student-to-teacher ratio at 18:1 in elementary and middle school, and holds Pre-K and Kindergarten classes to 10:1 because each of those rooms has a teacher's assistant in addition to the lead teacher. Pre-K and Kindergarten cover Bible stories, number and letter recognition, phonics, math, crafts, and directed play. Elementary and middle school students study Bible, math, science, English writing and grammar, reading and literature, and social studies daily, with weekly classes in music, physical education, art, and Spanish. Classrooms use projectors and interactive whiteboards, and a mobile lab of Google Chromebooks is used for typing and basic coding. Each spring, students in Kindergarten through 8th grade take the Iowa Assessments to measure academic progress. Admission runs through an online application on the RenWeb system, followed by an enrollment packet and academic testing scheduled over the summer (Kindergarten readiness screening for the youngest students, placement assessments for grades 1 through 8). Children entering Kindergarten must turn 5 by October 15 and are expected to recognize letters, colors, shapes, and numbers. Tuition is billed annually through the FACTS management system and can be paid in a lump sum or monthly, and the school notes that tuition covers books, technology, and certain class supplies. For 2026-2027, posted fees include a $350 non-refundable annual registration fee, a $55 FACTS enrollment fee, an art fee, and a $50 graduation fee for Kindergarten and 8th grade. An early registration discount of $100 is available to families who pay by March 15. The school also runs an extended-day option and a summer program.
