What is an autism visual schedule?

A visual schedule uses pictures, words, or both to show what is happening now and what comes next. Many autistic children and students benefit from seeing a routine instead of only hearing verbal reminders.

Visual supports can help with morning routines, school transitions, bathroom steps, bedtime, community outings, and new or stressful activities. They work best when adults use the same language each time and keep the schedule close to the activity.

Printables are a starting point. If your child uses AAC, receives speech therapy, or has an IEP, align the visuals with that plan whenever possible.

How to introduce a visual routine

Keep the first version simple. A schedule that is easy to use every day is usually better than one with too many pieces.

1

Choose one routine with a clear beginning and ending.

2

Walk through each picture or step before the routine starts.

3

Fade prompts slowly after the child understands how the visual works.
