How communication cards can help

Communication cards use pictures and short labels to give a child a clearer way to request, choose, answer, or show a need. They can reduce guesswork when spoken language is hard, inconsistent, or unavailable in the moment.

Some families search for PECS printables when they mean picture-based communication supports. If your child is using a formal PECS program, AAC device, or speech therapy plan, use these printable cards in coordination with the professionals who know the plan.

Keep the first set small. A few high-use cards that are always available usually help more than a large binder that is hard to find during a stressful moment.

Printing and organizing communication cards

The goal is fast access. Place cards where the child uses them, and keep the setup easy for every adult to maintain.

Print sturdy copies

Use cardstock or laminate cards that will be handled often.

Cut only what you need

Start with a small set, then add cards as routines expand.

Model the card

Point to the card while saying the word so the support stays consistent.
