Floyd County Head Start

Floyd County Head Start Birth to Five is the federally funded early childhood program of the Floyd County Community Action Agency, which has served New Albany families for 47 years. Children who have turned 1 and are not yet 5 by August 1 attend at no cost: ages 1 to 2 join Early Head Start and ages 3 to 5 join Head Start. Families qualify through income below the federal poverty line, public assistance, homelessness or a child in state care, and others may enroll when slots allow.

The center is state-licensed and runs Monday through Thursday. Early Head Start classrooms meet 8 hours a day with a focus on school readiness, wellness and social-emotional growth, and Head Start classrooms meet 7 hours a day for early academic concepts, social skills and problem solving. We use a research-based curriculum, serve children with disabilities and dual language learners, and screen each child's hearing and vision early.

Children eat CACFP-approved meals, and transportation is available. Each family receives a home learning box at the first home visit, and family advocates help parents set goals and join parent workshops every other month.
