About Pine Elementary School
Pine Elementary is one of two magnet schools in Michigan City Area Schools, with a focus on the fine and performing arts. About 400 students attend, from preschool through 6th grade. Most live within our boundaries, and roughly 70 enroll through the district magnet program for the arts. Our building sits in Porter County and holds 23 classrooms, a piano lab, a multi-sensory room, a gym, a cafetorium with a stage and an outdoor learning space.
Three of our classrooms house a behavioral support program, two hold a developmental preschool, and one serves as a support room for students with a range of disabilities. Our specialists include a speech-language pathologist, a school psychologist, occupational and physical therapists, deaf and hard of hearing specialists, a counselor and student success coaches.
Full-time music, art and physical education teachers lead related arts, and arts integration runs throughout the day. After school, students can join piano lessons, computer club, science club or student council, and the Boys and Girls Club of La Porte County runs after-school care on site.

Constructive Pathways Montessori School
Our Montessori environment invites children to choose self-correcting materials and work independently. We guide practical-life, sensory, language, and math learning, along with cultural studies in nature, science, arts, literature, and history. Children also practice cooperation through sharing and working with classmates. For 2026-27, morning class runs from 8:00 to 11:15 a.m.; children in morning lunch and kindergarten stay until 12:15 p.m. Afternoon class runs from 11:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with 10:45 a.m. arrival for afternoon lunch and kindergarten students. Children may arrive from 7:50 a.m., and kindergarten and lunch students bring a packed lunch. We are enrolling for 2026-27.
Journey Academy
We provide individualized, self-paced learning for students in kindergarten through grade 9. Students work toward mastery across language arts, math, science, social studies, art, music, and STEM, with sensory-based tools and environments available to support learning. We also offer speech, occupational, and physical therapy, and serve students with a range of learning, sensory, and developmental profiles.
Joy Elementary School
Joy Elementary is the largest elementary school in Michigan City, serving students in kindergarten through sixth grade as part of Michigan City Area Schools. We are home of the Vikings. Students stay active through athletics, robotics, and the arts, and the district's Future Wolves programs teach fundamental sports skills to elementary players. Before- and after-school care is available through Safe Harbor, which serves Michigan City Area Schools students at all levels. Joy offers specialized programs for high-ability students and for students with special needs. Across the district, students in kindergarten, third, and sixth grade are screened with the CogAT-7, and identified high-ability students in grades 1 to 3 receive specialized small group instruction at each elementary building. Students found eligible for special education after a district evaluation receive special education and related services at no cost.
