About Notre Dame Catholic School

Notre Dame Catholic School opened in 1955 as a ministry of what is now Mary, Mother of Mercy Parish, and we teach children from preschool through 8th grade in Michigan City. Our curriculum follows the Indiana Department of Education Academic Standards, and both the state of Indiana and Cognia accredit the school. Our Breakouts program reaches students of all ability levels.

Preschool begins with Little Doves, a Tuesday and Thursday morning class for children who are 2 and a half. Redbird preschool for 3s and Bluebird pre-K for 4s offer three-day mornings, five-day mornings or a full day. Each preschool room has a licensed teacher plus an assistant at a 1:10 ratio, with art, PE and music classes.

Extra Innings provides before and after school care from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Families can apply for Indiana Choice Scholarships, SGO awards, diocesan assistance and our own Tuition Assistance Fund. The parent-run Home and School Association hosts field day, an annual 5K and restaurant giveback nights, and it runs our optional hot lunch program.

Joy Elementary is the largest elementary school in Michigan City, serving students in kindergarten through sixth grade as part of Michigan City Area Schools. We are home of the Vikings. Students stay active through athletics, robotics, and the arts, and the district's Future Wolves programs teach fundamental sports skills to elementary players. Before- and after-school care is available through Safe Harbor, which serves Michigan City Area Schools students at all levels. Joy offers specialized programs for high-ability students and for students with special needs. Across the district, students in kindergarten, third, and sixth grade are screened with the CogAT-7, and identified high-ability students in grades 1 to 3 receive specialized small group instruction at each elementary building. Students found eligible for special education after a district evaluation receive special education and related services at no cost.
