Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Hinsdale

Where can I get learning disability testing in Hinsdale, IL?
Start with District 181, which evaluates at no cost to you. Write to your building principal with your child's name, age and grade, the reason you want an evaluation, and your full name and address. Illinois gives the district 14 school days to decide whether to evaluate and 60 school days after your consent to settle eligibility and hold the IEP meeting. If you disagree with the results, ask for an independent evaluation at public expense, which Illinois requires within 60 school days unless the district requests a hearing.
Are there autism programs in Hinsdale public schools?
District 181 serves autistic students through the IEP, and two structured programs serve students with a range of needs. RISE, at Walker Elementary for kindergarten through fifth grade, has small classes, close staff supervision and social work, occupational therapy and speech scheduled into the classroom, with a focus on social communication, emotional and sensory regulation and executive functioning. Foundations, at Hinsdale Middle School for grades 6 to 8, teaches functional academics with a team that includes a BCBA consultant.
Is School of Rock Hinsdale a special needs school?
No. School of Rock on South Washington Street teaches guitar, drums, bass, keyboard and singing through performance-based programs such as Rock 101, Rookies and Little Wing, plus camps and workshops. It offers no academic or special education instruction. If your child has an IEP, treat it as an after-school activity and ask the staff directly how they adapt lessons.
Does Hinsdale Adventist Academy offer special education?
Hinsdale Adventist Academy is a Seventh-day Adventist Christian school owned by the Illinois Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, covering preschool through grade 12, and its Little Lambs Early Learning Center takes children ages 3 to 5. As a private school it sets its own tuition and is not required to write IEPs, so ask what learning support it provides in writing. Under federal rules, the public district where a private school sits must still locate and evaluate enrolled children with disabilities.
How do dyslexia and ADHD qualify for help in Hinsdale schools?
Federal rules name dyslexia within specific learning disability and list ADHD under other health impairment, so a D181 or District 86 student with either can qualify for an IEP when the condition affects school performance and calls for specialized instruction. D181 also writes Section 504 plans for health conditions that need accommodations only. Most D181 support happens in the general classroom or a resource room, adjusted to the IEP.
Where do Hinsdale preschoolers with delays get services?
D181 serves children with disabilities from age 3. Its Neighborhood Preschool runs play-based classrooms for 3- to 5-year-olds where about half the students have IEPs and half pay tuition, and a speech-language pathologist, occupational and physical therapists and a social worker work inside the room each week. Under age 3, call Child and Family Connections #5, run by DayOne PACT in Lisle (331-481-4277), which covers DuPage County and the Cook County part of the 60521 ZIP code.
Does Illinois help pay private school tuition in Hinsdale?
Only modestly. The Invest in Kids scholarship tax credit expired on December 31, 2023. The state income tax education expense credit remains: 25 percent of K-12 tuition, book and lab fees beyond $250 per student, up to $750 a family, and households above $500,000 in adjusted gross income on a joint return, or $250,000 otherwise, cannot claim it. A private special education placement made by a D181 or D86 IEP team costs parents nothing.
What should I ask a Hinsdale school about learning support?
Ask who teaches reading or math intervention and how often, whether help happens in class or in a resource room, and which specialists work in the building. In D181, ask which school hosts the program your child needs, since RISE sits at Walker and Foundations at Hinsdale Middle, and how transportation works when that is not your neighborhood school. At a private school, ask how it uses a district evaluation report and handles test accommodations.
