Parkland Preparatory Academy

Listed
Bartlett, ILGrades K-12 & up to 22

Parkland Preparatory Academy is a private therapeutic day school for students ages 5 to 21 who have special education eligibility and have not found success in traditional public school settings. Our Bartlett campus is one of six Parkland locations in northern Illinois, alongside Oak Lawn, Plainfield, Lake in the Hills, Morton Grove and Rockford. Students come to us by referral from their public school district, usually with an IEP. Students without one can enter a diagnostic placement of up to 60 days while evaluations are completed. Students leave us by graduating, earning a certificate of completion or returning to a less restrictive setting. Licensed social workers, counselors and school psychologists lead group counseling in every classroom twice a week, 30 minutes for elementary and middle school and 45 minutes for high school, plus individual counseling written into each IEP. Our clinical model is trauma informed and built on the Circle of Courage, and staff train in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention. Teachers use HMH Into Reading and Into Math, with Imagine Edgenuity for high school credit and credit recovery.

The Village of Bartlett is one of 11 communities served by School District U-46, a unit district with more than 40,000 students from pre-K through 12th grade. U-46's Specialized Student Services department, at 355 E. Chicago Street in Elgin, runs special education, 504 plans, and health services. The district's main line is 847-888-5000.

U-46 offers free developmental screenings for all 3- and 4-year-olds living in the district, covering language, cognitive, physical, and social-emotional development. Families must finish online registration before the district schedules a screening, and it may take several weeks to hear back. A screening does not guarantee a preschool seat. For school-age students, U-46 describes a full continuum of special education, from general education with modifications to a residential program.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Bartlett

How do I get my Bartlett preschooler screened by U-46?
Complete the district's online registration first, because U-46 will not schedule a screening without it. At the appointment, bring your child's birth certificate, proof of income, proof of residency in U-46, and a school physical from the past year. Screenings are offered in English and Spanish. A screening is required for U-46 preschool but does not guarantee enrollment.
Is a preschool screening the same as a special education evaluation?
No. A screening is a snapshot of development. If you suspect a disability, ask in writing for a full evaluation. Illinois gives the district 14 school days after a written request to decide whether to evaluate, then 60 school days after your consent to hold the eligibility and IEP meetings. Our guide on requesting an evaluation helps you write it.
What placements can a U-46 IEP team consider?
U-46 describes a continuum that runs from general education with modifications or staff consultation at the least restrictive end to a residential program at the most restrictive. If an IEP team places a student in a private special education facility, Illinois keeps the home district responsible for writing the IEP and making sure it is carried out. Our IEP guide explains placement.
My child is in Early Intervention. When does U-46 get involved?
Illinois starts transition planning at 2 years, 6 months, when the EI service coordinator asks for consent to send a referral packet to the school district. By the third birthday, the district must determine eligibility and, if your child qualifies, have an IEP developed and in place. See our early intervention guide for the steps.
