About Step Ahead Preschool

Step Ahead Preschool began about 20 years ago, when our founder, a former public school teacher with a degree in elementary education, started teaching preschool so she could also be home with her own children. Our teachers are certified and classroom-experienced, one holds a degree in Early Childhood Special Education, and an aide supports our 3-year-old classes.

We run separate classes for 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds, capped at 12 children each. Three-year-olds work on shapes, colors, name recognition, letters, counting to 10, scissor skills, sorting, patterns and self-care routines like cleaning up and putting on coats. Four-year-olds move on to upper and lower case letters, numbers to 20, ten frames, rhyming, word families, sight words and syllables.

Each class follows a set rhythm: table activities at arrival, calendar and circle time with songs and movement, small-group centers with one-on-one instruction, snack and free time.

Early childhood special education Play-based learning Public school

Lincoln Early Childhood Center in Pocatello houses two preschool programs of Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25, both serving children ages 3 to 5. Our Lincoln Early Intervention Program provides early childhood special education through individualized instruction and play-based learning. Special education teachers, speech-language pathologists, and occupational and physical therapists work side by side with support staff in our classrooms. The building is also home to PCSD25 Head Start, one of the first Head Start programs in the country, serving limited-income families since 1965. Head Start offers part-day and full-day classes for 3 to 5 year olds, and families who meet federal income guidelines can pre-apply in English or Spanish. Along with early learning, the program brings health and family services, with a family advocate, a family engagement specialist and a psychologist on the team. We also run an offsite Head Start classroom on Tyhee Road in Chubbuck, and bus service is available for our families.
