About Woodfield Academy

Woodfield Academy was founded in 1997 by Macon parents whose children had learning differences, at a time when the closest suitable schools were in Atlanta. We remain the only school in Macon designed for students with learning differences, and families apply with a current psychological evaluation and IEP.

Classes generally hold 8 to 10 students. Lower School covers grades 1 to 4 at grade level with differentiated instruction, and in grades 5 to 8 students are grouped by academic progress and begin life skills classes. Our Upper School adds a 13th grade, and graduates under 21 may stay for a capstone year with an internship or part-time job. Life skills cover cooking, laundry, job skills, banking and public transportation, and we require 31 credits to graduate, more than the state's 23.

Instruction draws on nature. Our campus has a permanent 9-hole disc golf course, the club also plays at Lake Tobesofkee, and students take frequent field trips. Electives rotate yearly and have included ecology, zoology, agriculture and journalism. An after-school program runs until 5:30 p.m., and we accept the Georgia Special Needs Scholarship.
