Founded in 1852, it is the state-operated school for students who are blind or visually impaired, including students who have additional disabilities. The campus offers both day and weekday residential programs. Outreach and professional development are available to families and districts across the state. The academy is accredited by SACS and Cognia. Local districts provide daily buses for day students and Sunday-to-Friday transportation for residential students. Dorms are separated by gender and have adult supervision after school and overnight. Placement is an IEP decision.
