Families choose a program. Our Traditional program serves students on grade level or one to two levels behind, including students with IEPs and gifted students, and leads to an accredited high school diploma. The Foundations program teaches at each student's functional level with intensive language therapy for students with speech impairments, autism, intellectual disabilities and developmental delays, and those students finish with a certificate of completion or a diploma on Access Points. A Transitional program lets students earn a diploma over an extended period. Tuition is $11,000 for Traditional, $13,000 for Foundations and $16,500 for Achieve. Comparing school options in St Petersburg

St. Petersburg parents often search for a private school for ADHD, anxiety or autism in Pinellas County after a hard year in a large classroom. Before you leave public school, know the trade: Pinellas County Schools must deliver an IEP at no cost, while a private school sets its own supports and the district provides, at most, a Services Plan.

Pinellas serves about 13,500 students with disabilities from ages 3 to 21 and asks families to start with the school-based team. The district lists an ESE Parent Services contact and links to the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities at USF, FDLRS and the Family Network on Disabilities. For private schools, Pinellas offers services only to eligible students at not-for-profit private schools that agree to participate, and parents must request services each year. A student planning to use FES-UA gets an IEP meeting followed by a Matrix of Services. Each private school sets its own admissions, staffing and tuition, so compare its written supports with your child's current IEP before you withdraw.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in St Petersburg

How do I choose a private school for ADHD in Pinellas County?
Look for structure you can see: posted schedules, short instruction blocks, movement built into the day and a system for tracking assignments. Ask how teachers respond to impulsive behavior, whether a learning specialist meets students weekly. Our ADHD school support guide has more.
What should I look for in a Pinellas private school for anxiety?
Ask who on staff is trained to support anxious students and whether a counselor is available during the day, not only by referral. Ask about class size, how the school handles school refusal or panic during tests. In a Pinellas public school, anxiety that affects learning can be addressed through an IEP or 504 plan.
How do St. Petersburg families find private schools for autistic children?
Ask each school how many autistic students it serves, whether a BCBA consults, and how it supports communication and sensory needs. Compare that with the Pinellas ESE placement your child's team proposes. CARD at USF serves Pinellas County. Our Florida autism schools guide explains the program types.
What does a Pinellas Services Plan include at a private school?
Only the type and amount of special education the district will provide that year under its annual consultation agreement, not the services from a prior IEP. Your child needs Florida eligibility and enrollment at a participating not-for-profit school, and you must request services yearly. You, a private school teacher, a school representative and a district representative meet; students 12 and older are invited.
How does FES-UA work for a St. Petersburg private school in 2026-27?
FES-UA is an education savings account for Florida students age 3 until 22 or grade 12 with a qualifying disability, documented by an IEP or a licensed physician's or psychologist's diagnosis. Pinellas holds an IEP meeting and completes a Matrix of Services for students who plan to use it. Funds cover tuition, therapies and tutoring; full-time public enrollment ends the account.
What should St. Petersburg parents ask on a private school tour?
Ask the student-to-teacher ratio in your child's actual class and the credentials of whoever plans support for students with ADHD, anxiety or autism. Ask which therapies come to campus, and what happens when a student cannot stay in class. Ask whether the school is not-for-profit and participates in Pinellas services.
How do I request an evaluation for a Pinellas private or home school student?
You do not need to enroll in public school first. Pinellas keeps its Child Find duty for private and home school students, and parents can request an ESE evaluation through the district's non-public Child Find process. If an earlier evaluation is out of date, the non-public ESE office handles reevaluation requests and schedules a meeting to consider one.
What if my child returns to a Pinellas public school?
The district offers a free appropriate public education again once a private school student enrolls. The school develops an IEP within 20 days of the first day of attendance, then completes a Matrix of Services. Pinellas offers private school students with disabilities a reevaluation every three years.
