Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in North Fort Myers

Are there autism programs in North Fort Myers schools?
North Fort Myers has no stand-alone autism school on this page. Autistic students at the Academy for the Arts or North Fort Myers High get services through an IEP written by a Lee County team. Lee also runs separate exceptional student centers, including Buckingham Exceptional Student Center and Royal Palm Exceptional Center, and the IEP team decides whether a center placement fits. Ask which setting your child's team considered and why.
How much special education support do North Fort Myers schools provide?
Both schools serve sizable groups. At North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts, roughly one student in seven had an IEP in 2021-22. At North Fort Myers High, 188 students had IEPs and another 169 had 504 plans. Those numbers tell you staff work with disabilities every day, but ask how many ESE teachers are assigned to your child's grade and what a typical support class looks like.
What does special education look like at North Fort Myers High School?
At the high school, an IEP covers classes, testing accommodations and planning for life after graduation. With about 23 students per teacher, ask whether your teen will have a support class or co-teaching in core subjects, and who checks in when grades slip. Students in the Center for Arts and Media keep their IEP services there too, so ask how teachers apply accommodations in studio and performance work.
Are there private school alternatives near North Fort Myers?
Florida scholarships can follow your child to a private school. FES-UA, the Unique Abilities scholarship, is for students with a listed condition (autism, specific learning disability and other health impairment among them) from age 3 through age 22 or 12th grade, proven by an IEP or a diagnosis from a licensed physician or psychologist. Step Up For Students posts 2026-27 award amounts by county, so check Lee's figure before you compare tuition. Families without a qualifying diagnosis can try FES-EO, which funds the lowest-income applicants first.
What happens to my child's IEP if we leave Lee County schools for a private school?
The IEP stops controlling services. A child placed privately by parents has no individual right to the full services a public school would give, so any district services come through a more limited services plan. Also, an FES-UA scholarship ends if your child enrolls full time in a public school again. Weigh both before you withdraw from North Fort Myers Academy or the high school.
Where can a North Fort Myers child with dyslexia or ADHD get help?
A reading disorder like dyslexia qualifies under the federal category of specific learning disability, and ADHD usually falls under other health impairment. Your Lee County school can serve either through an IEP or a 504 plan. Write to the principal requesting an evaluation. Under state rule, Lee then has 30 days to seek your consent for testing or send written notice explaining a refusal.
Who evaluates North Fort Myers preschoolers for delays?
FDLRS Island Coast Child Find screens children ages 3 through 5 who are not yet in Lee County public school; you refer through its website. If the screening shows a concern, Lee's PK Assessment Team schedules a full evaluation. For a toddler in the Early Steps program, Lee holds a transition conference between 31 and 33 months and schedules services to begin on or before the third birthday. USF's regional autism center also serves Lee County families.
What should I ask a North Fort Myers school about my child's IEP?
Ask who your child's case manager is and how often you will hear from them. Ask how teachers learn about accommodations in elective and arts classes, and how the school handles a behavior plan during a performance or field trip. Ask for progress reports with data, not just comments.
