Northwestern Regional opened in September 1958 to serve the four towns of Regional School District No. 7: Barkhamsted, Colebrook, New Hartford, and Norfolk. Our 42-acre campus in Winsted houses a middle school for grades 7 and 8 and a high school organized into two houses for grades 9 to 12, where 661 students are enrolled. The average academic class has 20 students, and 95 percent of our professional staff hold a master's degree or equivalent. Students earn 25 credits to graduate, choosing from semester and full-year courses at levels from introductory to advanced, with honors and college preparatory sections. We are accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Our Agricultural Education program is a regional draw, with courses in plant and animal science, natural resources, forestry, mechanics, and business management, a required work experience, and an active FFA chapter. Students from outside the district apply through the state agricultural science program. Our school psychologists and social workers provide individual and group counseling for students in grades 7 to 12 facing emotional, behavioral, or social challenges, and we offer social emotional learning across both schools.
