Comparing school options in Thermal

Thermal is the home of Coachella Valley Unified's district office, at 87-225 Church Street. The California Department of Education lists the district as serving preschool through adult education. Coachella Valley Unified is a member of the Riverside County SELPA, a joint powers group in which each member district handles search and serve for children with suspected disabilities who live in its area.

Coachella Valley Unified's Child Find page says the district must locate, identify, and evaluate all children with disabilities or suspected disabilities from birth through age 21. That includes children in private schools, highly mobile and migrant children, homeless children, and wards of the state. The duty applies to every child who lives in the state, so a family new to the area or one that moves often can ask for an evaluation right away. Put the request in writing to Coachella Valley Unified, and the district must answer with a proposed assessment plan within 15 calendar days.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Thermal

Does Child Find in Thermal cover migrant and highly mobile families?
Yes. Coachella Valley Unified's Child Find page lists highly mobile children, migrant children, homeless children, wards of the state, and private school students among the children the district must find and evaluate, from birth through age 21. A family that moves often can still request an evaluation in writing. Our guide on requesting an evaluation explains what to include.
What if my child had an IEP in another district this school year?
Under California Education Code 56043, when a student with an IEP transfers within the same school year, the new district must provide services comparable to the old IEP for up to 30 days, in consultation with the parent. By then it adopts the old IEP or develops a new one. Your former district must send records within five working days of a request. Bring a copy of the IEP to enrollment.
What is the Riverside County SELPA's role for Thermal families?
Riverside County SELPA writes the local plan that its member districts, including Coachella Valley Unified, agree to follow. Member districts are responsible for referral, assessment, eligibility decisions, and providing services in the least restrictive environment through the IEP team. For questions about your child, the SELPA tells families to contact their district of residence or the district providing services.
Who serves a Thermal infant or toddler?
California's Department of Developmental Services lists Inland Regional Center as serving Riverside and San Bernardino counties, with a main line of 909-890-3000. Regional centers run Early Start for children under three. As your child nears age three, ask the regional center and Coachella Valley Unified to plan the transition to preschool special education.
