Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Shingle Springs

Is there an autism school in Shingle Springs, CA?
Yes. Opportunity Acres, which also operates as Independent Trails, describes itself as both a day program for adults with autism and a non public school for students with autism. Its ranch setting on South Shingle Road is built around promoting the gifts and talents of people with autism. Ask Opportunity Acres how enrollment works and whether local districts place students there through an IEP.
Which school district serves Shingle Springs for special education?
Buckeye Union School District stretches across El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park and Shingle Springs, runs Buckeye Elementary in Shingle Springs, and serves students from preschool through eighth grade. It belongs to the El Dorado County SELPA, which sets the shared local plan for special education. Confirm your district from your home address before you write. Buckeye's first step is simple: if you suspect a disability, talk with your child's teacher or principal, then follow up in writing.
How long does a special education evaluation take in El Dorado County?
Roughly three months of school calendar, if you sign the plan within the 15 days you are given. The district has 15 calendar days from your written referral to propose an assessment plan, you have at least 15 days to review it, and your signature starts a 60-day clock that ends with the IEP meeting. Days between school sessions and vacations over five school days do not count, so a summer referral in El Dorado County waits for school to resume.
Can my child with an IEP attend California Montessori Project in Shingle Springs?
Yes. California Montessori Project is a public, tuition-free TK-8 charter network with six schools in the greater Sacramento area, and it admits new students by public random lottery, not by ability or disability. The Shingle Springs campus served 65 students with IEPs and 13 with 504 plans in 2021-22. At about 23 students per teacher, ask how special education staff support Montessori work periods.
Where can a Shingle Springs toddler get early intervention?
Alta California Regional Center, headquartered in Sacramento, covers El Dorado County among ten counties. Its Early Start intake number is 916-978-6400. A Shingle Springs child under 36 months can qualify with a developmental delay or a risk of developmental disability, and diagnosis and eligibility testing cost nothing. Near age three, email Buckeye Union's Student Services office to request a preschool assessment. Cameron Park Montessori on Mother Lode Drive enrolls children from 18 months to 6 years, year round, part time or full time.
Does Buckeye Union help kids with dyslexia or ADHD?
Buckeye Union has to evaluate any child it suspects has a disability, so start with the teacher. California treats dyslexia as a specific learning disability when testing meets the criteria, under Education Code 56337.5, and its regulations count ADHD as an other health impairment. A child who does not need an IEP stays in the regular program. A Section 504 plan can still add accommodations, which matters at a self-paced Montessori campus too.
How does tuition work for special needs schools near Shingle Springs?
Buckeye Union schools and California Montessori Project charge nothing. Plan on paying yourself for any private school, because the California Department of Education says no state program publicly funds private tuition. Its one exception covers a student with a disability whom a public district places in a nonpublic school, and the placing district pays. If Opportunity Acres comes up at an IEP meeting, ask the district to put the placement and who pays in writing.
What should I ask when touring a school in Shingle Springs?
Ask who delivers speech, occupational therapy and behavior support, and whether they work on campus or come from the county. At Opportunity Acres, ask how the school program connects to its adult day program as a teen gets older. At a Montessori campus, ask how teachers adapt self-directed work for a child who needs more structure, and how often you will see progress data.
